Mrs. Horky's Young 5's Classroom presents: Where We Are In Place and Time!
During the Young 5 unit Where We Are in Place and Time, students spent time inquiring about animal homes and journeys. Students learned that homes are diverse and that animals need specific habitats to survive. During their Daily 5 reading time, students read about animals, animal homes and how animals move throughout their habitat. Several class books were made and titled: What Lives in the Ocean?, What Lives in the Jungle?, What Lives in the Desert?, and What Lives in the Forest? During Math, students graphed their favorite animals. In the classroom sensory table students also explored in sand and dug for seashells and dried choral which made the connection to animals that live in the ocean and the beach. Students were inquirers as they chose an animal to research to close out the unit. After researching the animal and where the animal lived, they made an illustration and wrote about their animal. The class also visited the Indian Creek Zoo where they were able to see animals up close and personal and even feed some! What a great unit to connect art, math, and language arts!
