Counselor Connection

December/ January Newsletter

Dear Parents and Guardians of Timberlane Students,

Happy Holidays! With the break approaching and conferences behind us, now is a great time to check in with your child about how they are doing academically. OnCourse is a great way to keep track of your child's assignments and grades. Middle school students often need assistance with organization and planning and this tool makes it possible for you to help them stay afloat. If you are struggling to log in, please do not hesitate to reach out!

A growing topic over the past few months among students has been the use of social media sites. While technology is making it possible for people to connect with others who have similar interests, talents, and learning opportunities, there are many safeguards that should be in place to help keep students safe. Informing youth about digital imprinting is important. Many colleges, universities, and employers often look at social media sites when reviewing applications and it is important for youth to know that once something is posted, it can be traced back to them. Students should be reminded not to share their passwords with anyone else, and to block and report anyone who sends them inappropriate communications.

We encourage students to THINK before they post:

T- Is it true?

H- Is it helpful?

I- Is it inspiring?

N- Is it Necessary?

K- Is it kind?

For more information check out OnguardOnline.gov which includes a guide for adults on how to protect kids online.

In closing, I hope that the upcoming winter break brings fun, peace, and joy to you and your children! Please reach out with any questions or concerns.

Warmly,

Ms. Fertig
