Transition
We will use this section to keep you up to speed as we transition students from the elementary schools to Greene and from Greene to the junior high.
Important Transition Dates:
In the upcoming weeks of February, all rising 7th graders will receive via postal mail information on the scheduling process. In addition, we will be communicating through Greene S'more, our course planner. The course planner outlines the courses your child will be required to take and also elective options.
- Friday, Feb. 22, 2019: Rising 7th grader tours at the JH
- Tuesday Feb. 26, 2019: Parent Information Night/Academic Fair. More details to come! 6:00pm in the media center is for parents whose son/daughter receives special education services. 7:00pm Presentation/Academic Fair Q&A time immediately following
- The scheduling process will be taking place through a computer based process this year. We are very excited, as it has saved Greene and Junior High staff much manpower! The mailing you receive, in addition to the course planner, will allow you to work with your child to determine the courses he/she is required/interested in taking. Then, in early March, the JH counselors will sit with each child to enter in the information. After this process is completed, your child will bring home a verification sheet for tentatively scheduled courses. At this point, you can review the verification sheet with your child. Thank you for your cooperation in advance for your patience with this updated process!
The staff at the junior high is so excited to welcome your son/daughter! We look forward to meeting you along this transition. If questions arise, please do not hesitate to reach out to the junior high for assistance!
Rising 6th Graders
At the Greene School, we place a high value on relationships and believe that placement with at least one friend assists our students with the transition to the intermediate school. Students are placed by academic, social, and emotional needs. We collaborate with teachers and parents to gather information. In addition, we ask parents to list six friends on a student information form that you will receive in February. While we will not be taking parent requests for specific teachers or teams, we will be taking requests for placement with a friend. This friend will be in your child’s homeroom and with him/her at lunch and recess, providing a familiar face throughout the day allowing for continued relationship building at Greene. We do offer a variety of Project Based Learning experiences at the Greene School. If you were not placed in a PBL team as a 5th grader, we will give you the option of selecting a PBL team as a 6th grader, if you complete the form.

From Child Nutrition
Winning Nutrition For Young Athletes
To fuel up and play his/her best, it's important for your athlete to consume the right foods and drinks at the right times. Consider this game plan.
Meals and Snacks. Have your child eat a meal 2-3 hours before a practice or game, a snack when it's over and a meal within 2 hours afterward. Protein builds and repairs muscles, while carbohydrates provide energy, so his/her meals should include both. For example, he/she might have an apple and a turkey and cheese sandwich on whole-grain bread. Or she could eat baked salmon, brown rice, and a green vegetable.
Drinks. Water is usually the best choice to stay hydrated before, during and after exercise. Encourage your tween or teen to take a water bottle to practice and games and to drink when she feels thirsty. Also, while low-fat chocolate milk may sound like a treat, it happens to contain the ideal protein-carb ratio for athletes, so he/she might drink a glass after a workout. Explain that he/she doesn't need sports drinks- which are typically filled with sugar- unless he/she exercises vigorously for more than an hour.

Preventing the Flu: Good Health Habits Can Help Stop Germs
The single best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated each year, but good health habits like covering your cough and washing your hands often can help stop the spread of germs and prevent respiratory illnesses like the flu. There also are flu antiviral drugs that can be used to treat and prevent flu.
1. Avoid close contact. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.
2. Stay home when you are sick. If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. This will help prevent spreading your illness to others.
3. Cover your mouth and nose. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.
4. Clean your hands. Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
6. Practice other good health habits. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids,
and eat nutritious food.

Wordmasters Challenge Honors
A student representing Leslie Burklow’s Advanced Language Arts class at E.H. Greene School recently won highest honors in the first of three meets in this year’s WordMasters Challenge. This is a national language arts competition entered by approximately 150,000 students annually.
Competing in the very difficult Gold Division of the Challenge, sixth grader Roger Millar earned a perfect score. In the entire country only 98 sixth graders achieved at this level. Others in the
class who also achieved outstanding results, by only missing one answer in the meet, included sixth graders Cole Dowden and Abby Sheard.
The WordMasters Challenge is an exercise in critical thinking. It challenges the students to use words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships. Working to solve the analogies helps the students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically. Congratulations to you all!!
