John Smith and others founded the Virginia colony because they needed money. It was not doing good. They survived because they found out how to grow tobacco, wheat, and corn.

Geography in the southern colonies (Virginia) ranged from coastal plains in the east to Piedmont farther towards the inside of the land. The westernmost regions were all mountains. The soil was perfect for farming and the growing season was longer than in any other region.
Economy In Virginia
Economy in Virginia was almost entirely based on farming. Cash crops were, rice, indigo, tobacco, sugarcane, and cotton. Crops were grown on large plantations where slaves and indentured servants worked the land.
Religion in the southern colonies, like Virginia, included baptists and Anglicans. The church services were inside meeting houses and had wooden benches that the people sat on for most of the day, because that's how long the services usually were.
The Government structure of Virginia was the house of Burgesses there were 22 elected members and they all gathered together making the first U.S representative government .
