First Colonial Band Notes

October 3rd, 2021

Letter from the Director

Greetings FC Band Family,

We are off to a fast start with this school year. Each of the classes are back in action with an established routine, our Symphonic Band is preparing for the first concert of the year, & the Marching Patriots are about to begin the competitive portion of their season.

With so much going on in our band program, it is important that all of our members, parents, & guardians keep up to date with our rehearsals, performances, meetings, & fundraisers. Information will be regularly be sent home with students, posted on the website (, emailed via Synergy (ParentVue & StudentVue), shared in our newsletter, posted in class, communicated via BAND for our ensembles, & sent via Remind throughout the school year. Please make sure you are up to date in communications & information---we communicate early & often to avoid any potential issues.

As we continue to climb out of the pandemic & rebuild our program, it is more important than ever that we have a robust & active parent group. FCBB meets monthly & is essential to the success of our program. Currently, we have a very small number of parents doing the vast majority of the work, be it fundraising, chaperoning, organization, communication, construction, & numerous other tasks. This is not sustainable. As we continue to progress through the year, we would like to be able to offer our typical variety of ensembles, but without support (time, efforts, fundraising), things will have to be cut. Please make every effort to support your students & our program so we can continue the proud tradition of excellence in our program.

Musically Yours,

Luke Walker

Fall Performing Arts Concert

Our first concert of the 2021-2022 school year will be held on Thursday, October 14th. This concert will combine the Symphonic Band, Chamber Orchestra, & Madrigals as a joint Performing Arts Department concert.

Students Call Time: 6pm

Concert Start Time: 7pm

Concert Attire: Black Tuxedos / Black Concert Dress ("Laurel" model from SE Apparel)

For those interested in ordering the tuxedo or dress online, we recommend Southeastern Apparel. The tuxedo can be ordered here. The Laurel dress can be ordered here.

For those wishing to obtain the tuxedo not through Southeastern Apparel, that is fine as long as it meets the concert attire code (black tuxedo pants, white tuxedo shirt, black tuxedo jacket, black bow tie & cummerbund). For those wishing to obtain the black concert dress not through Southeastern Apparel, the dress must match the "Laurel" model linked above.

After School Rehearsals

As per VBCPS course requirements, we will be having after-school rehearsals for all Symphonic Band students (brass, woodwind, percussion) leading up to our Fall Concert. All dates are listed in the course expectations & handbook. The rehearsals for this concert unit:

Tuesday, October 5 2:30-4:30pm

Tuesday, October 12 2:30-4:30pm*

*Dress Rehearsal

Please note, all rehearsals are mandatory & are graded. Rehearsals take priority over work/clubs/sports practice/etc. A 0 will be earned by all with unexcused absences. Students with unexcused absences from the Dress Rehearsal will not be permitted to perform at the concert.

Fall Fundraiser

We are extending our Fall Fundraiser until October 6th, 2021. This is extension is due to the extremely low participation & sales in the band program. Currently, we have only sold 132 out of the 400 item goal needed to support our budget. The Joe Corbi fundraiser includes pizza kits, cookie dough, pies, cheesecakes, & other fall treats. Fundraising brochures were sent home on 9/13 & 9/14, depending on when your student had band. All checks should be made out to FCBB.

The proceeds from this fundraiser will fund:

  • music for ensembles
  • equipment for ensembles
  • guest clinicians for the band classes
  • spare concert apparel

We need every member to participate & pull their weight so we can continue to offer our cocurricular & extracurricular ensembles. Without this funding, many of these ensembles will not be able to occur this school year.

Marching Band Update

We have finished learning the drill for the 1st & 2nd movements of our show, Kitty Hawk. Progress is still moving at a steady pace, but we do need to increase the urgency at which we learn so we can finish the show by our first competition this week. Students should be practicing their instruments at home a minimum of 5 days per week, 20 minutes per session.

Our competition schedule has been modified slightly due to events outside of our control. We are currently scheduled to compete on:

  • October 9th @ Grassfield HS
  • October 16th @ Princess Anne HS (VMBC Tidewater Regional)
  • October 23rd @ Green Run HS Stallion Classic
  • October 30th @ Tallwood HS

Detailed itineraries are posted in BAND the week leading up to each competition. We need a minimum of 10 parent volunteers per competition to assist in moving our pit & props. Signups are posted in BAND (FCBB & Marching Patriots groups).
