Math Using an Abacus

Ms. McCumber's 5th-grade class took advantage of the recent beautiful weather and worked on Math outside. They are learning how to represent numbers on the Cranmer abacus, a type of abacus explicitly developed for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. They are working on this as a part of their Place Value unit in Math and will begin using it to add and subtract soon. The students love this new method of completing Math concepts and have been working together in their free time, challenging each other to create bigger numbers. Photo shows Scotty working with his abacus.

Donations to the Panther Resource Center

The EDGE program is accepting donations. We are accepting shelf-stable food, and personal care items. Our own OSSB students can shop for food and clothing to meet their needs. Donation boxes are located in both the new and old lobbies at the Ohio State School for the Blind. Thank you for any support you can provide!

It's Time for Recess at OSSB!

There is a buzz around OSSB! Students and staff have been anxiously awaiting a new, inclusive playground for all! A large semi appeared at OSSB recently, and new playground equipment was delivered on October 4th!

Since then a crew has been on-site, and installation has begun! The ground has been leveled, and workers have started to put colorful playground equipment in place across from the OSSB student dining rooms in the original building. It is hoped that the playground will be finished by the end of this month - workers will finish installing equipment this week, and then will be pouring the playground surface. We are excited that students will have a brand new space to enjoy recess! Photos show the grass covering the space where the new playground will be, the same area now just dirt, with colorful equipment starting to be put in place, and finally an up-close shot of the new slides and climber. The photo in the newsletter background is a closeup of some of the accessible new playground.

White Cane Week at OSSB

White Cane Day is this week, and OSSB's Orientation and Mobility team have been working to develop some learning opportunities for students and staff. World White Cane Day is celebrated every year on October 15.

The mission of White Cane Day has evolved over the years and has and developed into educating about blindness and how the blind and visually impaired can live and work independently while giving back to their communities. It also strives to celebrate the abilities and successes achieved by people with visual impairments and to honor the many contributions being made by the blind and visually impaired. Activities at OSSB to celebrate the week will include White Cane Tune-Ups, White Cane Day Crafts, White Cane Day obstacle course, and a panel zoom session from Pilot Dogs about the importance of strong O&M skills when considering guide dog.

Don't forget to order your OSSB White Cane Day shirt by Friday, October 15, at https://www.bonfire.com/white-cane-day-2021-1/

Celebrate White Cane Day with Ohio State School for the Blind. Show your support for White Cane Day and support the Ohio State School for the Blind's Orientation and Mobility Department. The campaign will close next week, and shirts should be delivered shortly thereafter.
