What's New at Walnut?

February 1, 2016

Principal's Message

What symbol comes to mind when you think of February? A heart, of course! The heart of our school is the community within its walls. Without caring staff members, students, and families bringing life and purpose to our site, Walnut would just be a set of buildings. I feel so fortunate to come to work each day and partner with people dedicated to seeing our students thrive as 21st century learners and good citizens. In addition to our committed teachers and staff members, parents are crucial members of this partnership. Each year, I am responsible for submitting a Single Plan for Student Achievement, in which I outline school goals decided upon by our School Site and English Advisory Councils. This year, in addition to the goals of increasing student achievement and decreasing the achievement gap, we added the goal of increasing parent involvement. Research shows that the more parents are involved in their children's education, the more confident their children are as learners. While there are many ways to communicate to your child that you value their education, including supporting them with homework and reading together, we also want parents to feel comfortable at the school site. You are cordially invited to attend school events, volunteer in a classroom, attend an ELAC or School Site Council meeting, or take a parenting class. Also, please consider becoming involved with PTA. It is a fun way to get to know other parents and keep the heart of Walnut beating! Several current PTA board members will be "graduating" next year, and we are looking for new people to serve on the board and/or help with a one-time event like Monster Mash, Walk-a-Thon, etc. We need you! For more information, please read the message below from our current PTA President, Mrs. Jill Frazier. Thank you, parents, for all you do!

Wanted: New District Advisory Council Representative

Walnut is in need of a new representative to the District Advisory Council (DAC). Would you consider meeting this need? Meetings are held the second Tuesday morning of each month, and we are looking for someone to attend as Walnut's representative on March 8, April 12, and May 10. One person from each CVUSD school attends, and the meeting is run by district leaders. Representatives get the "inside scoop" on what is happening in our district, and they are able to give input into district decision-making. The representative would also attend Walnut's School Site Council meeting in April and May to give a brief overview of what was covered at DAC. Please contact Mrs. Wall as soon as possible if you are interested, and she will answer any questions you have. A big Wildcat Thank You goes out to Mrs. Giesler, who has represented Walnut well for the past year!

PTA is a really great way to get involved at Walnut! In my years on the board I have come to know the phenomenal teachers and staff that make Walnut such a special place. I have enjoyed planning school-wide events for the students at Walnut. And, most of all, I have made friendships with other Walnut parents that will last a lifetime. It really is fun! Please consider helping Walnut’s PTA continue to do great things for our students. It will be a decision you will be glad you made. If you would like more information about the positions open for next year, please email Jill Frazier at: j4frazier@gmail.com.

Meet a Walnut Staff Member

The Wildcats are so pleased to have Mrs. Hammer as our Computer Specialist this year! Mrs. Hammer was born in Kansas and later moved to Newbury Park. She attended CVUSD schools from 4th grade through 12th grade. In fact, she won an award for perfect attendance from 6th grade through high school graduation! She was one committed student! She also played varsity tennis and still enjoys coaching soccer, tennis, cheer leading, gymnastics, and dance. Ms. Hammer received her Bachelor's degree in Liberal Studies from Cal Lutheran and her teaching credential from CSUCI. She has three adorable kids who attend our local schools. At Walnut, Ms. Hammer works with all students at least twice a week teaching digital fluency, digital citizenship, and overseeing computer learning programs. She also helps maintain our website and teaches an after-school tutoring group.

Walnut Elementary School

Walnut is a little elementary school with a BIG heart, where every student is valued and encouraged to develop a lifelong love of learning. We believe in developing the whole child, so we invest in the visual and performing arts, technology, and physical fitness in addition to traditional academics. Walnut has an active PTA, School Site Council, and English Language Advisory Council. Each of these groups of parents and community members would LOVE to have YOU join them in making sure Walnut provides the best possible learning environment for students and families. Please contact us if you'd like to know more. --Mrs. Wall, Principal
