Menthol Cig Use Rising in U.S., Especially Among Young
October 17, 2016
The use of menthol cigarettes is on the rise in the United States, bucking the downward trend in overall cigarette smoking, survey findings suggest.
In national surveys conducted between 2010 and 2014, a total of 39% of current cigarette smokers reported choosing menthol brands, compared with 35% of current smokers surveyed between 2008 and 2010.
Younger smokers were more likely to smoke menthol cigarettes than older smokers, and the increase in overall menthol cigarette use was most pronounced among whites, Asians, and Hispanics.
African-American smokers have traditionally been the largest consumers of menthol cigarettes, and this remains the case: in the 2008-2010 and 2012-2014 surveys, respectively, 86% and 84.6% of African-American smokers reported preferring menthol brands.
The new survey findings were reported by Andrea Villanti, PhD, director for Regulatory Science and Policy at the Schroeder Institute for Tobacco Research and Policy Studies at the anti-tobacco group Truth Initiative in Washington, D.C., and colleagues, online inTobacco Control.
Opioid epidemic’s newest killer is 10,000 times stronger than morphine
By Brian MacQuarrie Boston Globe OCTOBER 16, 2016
An extremely powerful drug used as an elephant tranquilizer has quickly become a new killer in the nation’s opioid epidemic, and New England authorities and health workers are bracing for its arrival.
The drug, carfentanil, is a synthetic opioid that is 10,000 times stronger than morphine and 100 times more potent than fentanyl, another deadly synthetic opioid. The emergence of a new, even more powerful drug would present a fresh challenge to local officials already battling a raging crisis.
So far, carfentanil’s reach has been confined primarily to the Midwest, particularly Ohio, but New England officials said the aggressive demand for illicit opioids means carfentanil could surface here soon.
“I’m afraid that these things tend to spread,” said Dr. Marc Larochelle, a physician and researcher at Boston Medical Center.
October is National Bullying Prevention Month
BY Laura Campbell LONG ISLAND NEWS & PR OCTOBER 18 2016
According to the latest statistics on bullying:
- 52% of young people report being cyber bullied; 20% of them on a regular basis
- 55% of all teens on social media have witness outright bullying online
- 95% of teens that witnessed cyber bullying have ignored the behavior
- 10% of teens tell a parent that they are a victim of cyber bullying
And, according to Dana Mastrangelo, Program Manager at Long Island Crisis Center, “Calls to our crisis hotlines regarding bullying and cyber bullying definitely increase after the first few weeks in September once school has begun and the students have settled in. October is the perfect time to raise awareness about this phenomenon that can have such devastating effects on its victims.”
Laura Campbell, the Crisis Center’s Community Education Coordinator, has a three-way approach to increase awareness and promote positive steps to prevent bullying/cyber bullying:
