Freedom Riders
1961
In, 1961 a group of young teenagers both back and white decided to integrate themselves on a bus and set out for the deep south to defy Jim Crow laws and call for a change. The Birmingham, Alabama, Police Commissioner, Bull Conner, organized a mob agianst the them with a local Ku Klux Klan chapter. Two buses were attacked, one of which was set afire by a firebomb.many people were hurt. they kept on and soon ended in Mississippi.
Connections to the Civil Rights Movement and its Success
The Interstate Commerce Commission outlawed segregation in interstate bus travel in September, 1961. This ended the bus boycott and gave African Americans more hope.
I believe that the freedom riders was a big step in the civil rights movement. they have been beaten and abuse just because they want their rights as an human being.
they faced many mob violence and blockades on the way.
