ODDS and ENDS
I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. It was wonderful having some extra time to spend with family!
On Thursday, your kiddo will be taking an Interim CAASP Test. This will give them an opportunity to see what their grade level test will look like as well as practice test taking skills.
Reading Logs- We are going to change up the reading logs. Students will still be reading for 20 minutes nightly and will be logging every book they complete. We will also be starting a 40 book challenge. Kids are encouraged to read books in different genres. Students will be encouraged to continue to take AR tests as they finish books.
Winter Festivities- On Thursday, 12/21, we will have a hot chocolate bar and watch a movie that the kids will choose. Also, be on the look out for a note home this week about an amazing community service project for all of our 4th and 5th graders at Union Hill!
Pumpkin Patch- Thank you so much for all of your help with pumpkin patch! Our booth was a huge success!! Can't wait to add some items to our classroom!
Volunteers - We have a few parents volunteering. If you are interested please contact me and we will get you scheduled!
Thanksgiving Breakfast & Read In - Wednesday was the best day ever! The kids loved the yummies that you donated and loved reading. Check out the pictures below.
EPIC - This week I signed your student up for a free epic account. Epic is an amazing source of for kids to read and even listen too! Kids can log in from home as well. Here is the link and class code. They know their pin number. https://www.getepic.com/sign-in-student . Class Code EGV-4373
Wish List Items:
*15 Inexpensive over-the-ear headphones - We are using the chrome books
everyday for math. And the sound is distracting to the other grade level. Similar to the picture below.
Assignments- Just a reminder that students can redo any work that comes home on Friday in their Friday Folders. Completed work must be turned in on Monday. I will then regrade and average the two scores.
Grades- Be sure to be checking powerschool for your students grades. if you do not now how to access please let me know.
Math Help - Please be sure to check the following places for math help if needed. Here are a couple resources that can help with math homework! Both are outstanding.
https://www.youtube.com/user/dhabecker - videos of the problem set and some of the homework.
Oakdale Unified School District Web Page. Select Grade and then Lesson Module and Lesson Number. This is a video that will show how to complete a few problems on each of the homework pages. This page also has parent letters that are helpful. I will be having the kids put then in their binders!
FYI - both of these sites call Eureka Math -- Engage New York. They are the same program just with a different name!
Zearn.org - Zearn is another site that can be beneficial to your student. Zearn goes along with each lesson in Eureka math. There is a guided practice that helps to solidify the different skills. This would be especially beneficial if your child was absent from school! Each student in my room has a zearn account. Their log in is taped in their planner. 5th graders have used zearn more in class than the 4th graders.
BLOOMZ - if you haven't signed up yet! Please do! Log in information is directly below this box. I will be posting our planner daily on here.
Curriculum Update
READING
4th Grade
We continue reading By the Great Horn Spoon. We are learning are the main characters Jack and Praiseworthy as they travel to the Gold Fields in California on the Lady Wilma. Ask your kiddo about the story so far!
5th Grade
We are reading a magnificent novel called Blood on the River. It is the story of Sam Collier as he travels to the New World to work with Captain John Smith and the Virginia Company to set up the first successful settlement at Jamestown.
Both grade levels are working on understanding their characters as we read.
WRITING:
Both 4th & 5th Grades
This week we will be working on our short answer responses. We will work on restating the question in the answer as well as elaborating and giving text evidence when we can.
MATH
4th Grade
Kiddos did a fantastic job on their mid module 3 quiz. We are moving into division next! Please continue to practice those math facts at home!
5th Grade
We are working on multi-digit division with 2 digit divisors. Please encourage your kiddo to slow down and double check their work. Division problems should be checked with multiplication.
SCIENCE
4th Grade
Students are learning about animals and ecosystems.
5th Grade
We are wrapping up our study of the circulatory system and moving into the respiratory system. On Tuesday, they will be dissecting a sheep heart and lung.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
4th Grade
Continuing to learning about California’s first people, the Native Americans!
5th Grade
We will be learning about the lost colony of Roanoke this week as well as Jamestown.
We are continuing our states and capitals with the midwest region. They will be bringing home flash cards and also have blank maps of the Midwest this week. Please encourage them to study daily for this. Even 5 minutes a day will make a huge difference! The test will be on December 6th. Kids will need to label the states on the map and then write the capital. Spelling counts!
