The Hungate Echo
Sherburn Hungate Weekly News - Issue 12
A word from Mr Broom
Personally, it's not been my favourite week of the year, having had two days out through illness. I hate being away from school and the catch up needed when I get back. However, it was lovely to see how the staff in my absence, have continued to make school an exciting and challenging learning experience for all our lovely children.
We're approaching the busiest time of the year, and the most exciting time. Please make sure you check the 'dates for your diary' section below to keep up-to-date with performances and events going on in school.
Enjoy the weekend and if you're out and about, wrap up warm.
No Smoking/Vaping Reminder
It has come to our attention that some parents/carers have been smoking/vaping on the school premises.
School is a non-smoking/vaping site.
Handover of Responsibility
We've had a few parents/carers raise concerns about children running and playing football before the start of school. While we want to encourage children to be active, we also want them to be safe and mindful of others and I've spoken to all children to remind them of this.
It is important to state that school responsibility for all children begins when the teachers receive the children from the playground at 0840. The safety and wellbeing of everyone before this has to be with the parent/carer, even if the child has walked to school unaccompanied by an adult.
Muddy Shoes & Clothes!
It has come to our attention that some of the children have taken to playing football on the field before the start of the school day. The grass isn't fit to play on so please encourage your children to wait on the school playground for the start of school.
Year 3/4 Christmas Sing-a-long!
The children in Year 3 and Year 4 (Mr Browning/Mrs Butterfield) will be holding a Christmas Carol Sing-a-long at 1415 on December 12th. Parents are more than welcome to attend and the event will be followed by the Year 3/4 open classrooms, where you'll get to see the wonderful work they have been doing over the past few weeks.
Elmet Lions & Spar 2019 Toy Appeal
We are proud to support the Elmet Lions & Spar 2019 Toy Appeal where we are trying to gather toys for local children aged 1 to 16. If you can, please help this much needed cause.
The Salvation Army and Leeds Carers will be distributing your kind donations. Please bring any donations to the school office no later than Friday 29 November.
Attendance 1% above national - Well done everyone (except me!)
With an average of 97%, our attendance this week is above the national average. Well done everyone.
Well done to those children with great attendance and congratulations to Year 3, who are our attendance champions this week with 98.7%.
A thank you from Selby Food Bank
British Values - A Weekly Focus
Part of our curriculum at Sherburn Hungate focusses on what are known as the core principles of British Values. These are the personal skills and traits that define what it means to be a successful British citizen. Each phase of school has a focus on a different value. Here's the schedule for this half term:
EYFS: Rule of the Law
KS1: Democracy
LKS2: The Rule of the Law
UKS2: Remembrance Day/Christmas/Religious Stories
Staff Shout Outs - If our team do a great job, let us know.
Registering Interest for Nursery Places
If you will be considering nursery provision for your younger children in the future please let us know. We review our nursery provision regularly and information on predicted numbers is essential to help with planning. Those on the register are also welcome to come along to the monthly stay and play sessions to meet other families with young children and our local childminders.

School Policy on Sickness/Diarrhoea
If you child suffers from sickness and / or diarrhoea, we try to minimise infection by implementing a 48 hour absence period from school. This begins from the last instance of any symptoms.
Thank you.
Site Safety Items
As the weather gets colder, we're noticing that the temporary path around the compound at the rear of school is becoming increasingly slippy. Mr Wooffindin is doing his best to keep it well gritted but please be extra careful if you use this route into/out of school.
Additionally, I've been liaising with Align Property Services to try and secure lighting for the temporary path as well as the new path around the EYFS area at the front of school. We're hopeful that some temporary lighting will be in place in the next week or so, which should help those using Buddies and those leaving school after clubs on an evening.
Free School Meal Applications
If you think your child may be eligible for Free School Meals (even if they are currently in receipt of the Universal Free School Meal provided to children in Reception / Year 1 and Year 2) please ask at the office for a form. The school receives additional funding for each successful application, and you would also be eligible for a voucher towards the cost of any uniform provided through school.
