LCES United: Together We Are More!
Mrs. Hladun's Tidings
Monday, August 21st is a unique day - we have the opportunity to observe a solar eclipse with 79% totality! We are thrilled to partner this experience with NGSS (Science Standards) Curriculum to view the eclipse with an inquiry-based focus...we are going to let the children observe the phenomenon and then 'unpack' their ideas and observations in order to guide them in understanding and learning about eclipses!
We have had a few questions about how we plan to handle the viewing of the eclipse, so please take a moment to review this information:
ENSURING STUDENT SAFETY:
- We took great care to ensure that we purchased the glasses recommended by NASA, and I verified myself (several times, if I'm being honest!) that the glasses meet the standards they've set. We purchased glasses from a vendor that NASA recommended. Big thanks to our PTC for purchasing a pair of glasses for each child and staff member at LCES.
- We trained our team this week and strongly emphasized the absolute requirement that children wear their glasses if they are outside looking at the sun. Each teacher received glasses for each child along with a reminder about safety expectations for the event.
- We expect that there will be extra parents on hand to view the eclipse with their child. Between our teachers, support staff, and parents, we feel confident that we can mind the children effectively to ensure their safety.
- We've also arranged for an alternative location both in the MPR and in the office so that children who are fearful of the experience or who are unable to follow the stated/repeated/reminders of the expectations have a supervised place to be - we will do everything we can so that we do not compromise their eye health.
PARENTS:
We invite you to join us at school during the eclipse (starts at 9:02 am, 79% totality at 10:17 am, and concludes at 11:39 am). We expect all of our students to be out on the playground for the viewing at approximately 10 am. If you plan to join us, we'd appreciate you arriving at or just shortly before 10 am.
- Parents must bring your own eye wear for the event
- Parents must sign in at the office to attend the event with their child
- Please email your teacher if you plan to attend, so teachers are prepared
Parents, please help us at home by reinforcing how ESSENTIAL it is that your child wear their protective glasses during the eclipse viewing.
Big thanks to our Science teachers, Mrs. Brothers and Mrs. Patterson for their work on preparing students and teachers for the eclipse. A shout out to our District Science Teacher, Mrs. Horton for her support, too!
Getting to and from school safely
- Supervision is provided starting at 7:55 am, please have students arrive on/after 7:55 am unless they are getting breakfast, which is available starting at 7:50 am.
- After school, supervision is provided until 3 pm (T-Fri) and 2 pm (M); please pick up your children on time.
- Please park your car in a parking stall; do not block the driveway with your vehicle. You can pull over to the curb, but you must remain with your vehicle
- Please continue to establish your pick up area. Remember that our student waiting areas are behind the blue dots in front of the main and kinder gates.
Recycling Markers
All around Lincoln Crossings students and teachers will be collecting used markers that
are ready to be discarded. The markers will be sent to a facility where they will be
converted into clean fuel. This fuel can be used to power vehicles, heat homes, cook
meals and more! Mrs. Brothers has a box on hand to collect any types of markers and we can take all brands!
