2021-22 Newsletter for Five Oaks Middle School
A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Falcon Families,
We have one more week of the first semester! We have had quite an interesting first semester with lots of twists and turns, but students and staff have done a great job of adapting to all of the changes. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the joint art and science project! We learned that it has been fully funded! This will go a long way in helping obtain supplies to help continue this incredible co-curricular learning experience for students!
I wanted to thank all the parents who came for our social media learning session with Beaverton Police. There were some technical difficulties but I appreciated everyone’s patience, engagement, and great questions.
This week, students will have the opportunity to finish up any last minute work from the first semester in preparation for teacher grading day on February 4. That day will be a non-school day for students so teachers can input grades. As in past years, you will get a notification when report cards are posted. We no longer send out paper copies, but you’ll be able to view first semester grades online by mid-February.
There are several upcoming events I am looking forward to in February.
- The 8th grade leadership students are preparing for a family meeting. This will be an opportunity for all Five Oaks families to come and hear from students about their experiences and needs. We will have a Q and A time as well!
- Spring Conferences are coming up the evening of February 16 and all day the 17th. We have taken your feedback from fall conferences and you’ll notice a few changes. The conferences will still be student-led and with advisory teachers, however, there will be more from each of your student’s other teachers to share this time. Look for sign-ups soon.
- Note: Due to conferences, President’s Day, and a staff development day, students will not have school from February 17-22.
We still need your help addressing student behaviors and masking. This past week has been a ton of reteaching expectations and we have had more resistance from pockets of students about following through with masking and behavior expectations. Please reiterate to your student that:
- Masks are mandatory and they must be worn correctly - that means over the nose and under the chin. We have masks in the main office, but we are running low on kid sized masks. Most of our students can wear adult sized masks, but we have many that need smaller ones.
- We don’t use homophobic or racialized language at Five Oaks. We have worked hard with students who have used these phrases in the past. Phrases like “that’s gay” or the use of the n word was, sadly, very prevalent amongst 8th grade especially at the beginning of the year. We have been working to address this with students and families, but could use your help in reminding students about the importance of keeping our community safe for everyone.
- Student phones should be off and away all day. This includes headphones and air pods unless there is a documented need for them during the day. Students miss instruction from teachers and are unable to hear in the hallways when they have their air pods in or headphones on. This can create an unsafe situation.
- Hallways are directional at Five Oaks. Each hallways has signage designating how students and staff should travel down them. 8th graders especially, have been working more often than usual to go the wrong direction down hallways.
While some of these things may sound trivial or like they’re not a big deal when they happen multiple times a day or in bigger numbers, it can create an unsafe or unwelcoming environment for staff and students. Any support you can provide in reminding your student of the expectations at school is much appreciated!
I’m excited about all that is coming for our students in this second semester! If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to reach out kelly_laverne@beaverton.k12.or.us

What is AVID? (Advancement Via Individual Determination)
What is the AVID Elective?
AVID is a researched based, nation-wide system that has been supporting students for 42 years. Its mission statement is simple, “To close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.” What does this mean at Five Oaks? AVID students are in an AVID Elective class taught by an AVID trained teacher to support students in developing critical thinking skills across all subject areas. AVID Elective classes include tutor-facilitated study groups, motivational activities, and academic success skills. In AVID,students participate in activities that incorporate strategies focused on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading to support their academic growth. Additionally, students engage in activities centered around exploring college and career opportunities and their own agency. The AVID elective class is hard work, but it is rewarding. It is a full year commitment designed to give students the best opportunity for college preparedness and acceptance.
If your student is interested in applying to be in AVID next year look for an application in February!

30-Day Notice and Opt-Out Information for the Oregon Statewide Assessment System (OSAS)
In 2010, Oregon adopted enhanced K-12 standards in English Language Arts and Math to ensure all students move from grade to grade with the academic knowledge and skills necessary for success beyond high school. The state tests challenge students to think critically, going beyond multiple choice and asking them to explain their answers. These tests provide a snapshot of your student’s progress and help us identify schools that need additional supports to ensure more students meet the higher standards.
If you do NOT want your student to take the English Language Arts or Math assessment test, please complete the opt-out form at the bottom of this page. Please submit this form to your student’s school by January 3 (for students in Grades 9-12) or February 4 (for students in Grades 3-8). This form is only valid for the 2021-22 school year.
