From Mr. Clemente

Dear Winter Park Band families,

I hope everyone is continuing to enjoy our three-day weekend! Especially after Thursday evening's home football game's kickoff being delayed one hour and forty minutes, I know we all needed some well-deserved physical and mental rest.

Congratulations to Jazz Ensemble I on their performance at the Winter Park Autumn Art Festival on Saturday! It was great to be able to perform at the festival again, have some great weather, and see so many parents, siblings, and fellow band mates there to watch the performance. Well done!

The Pit Orchestra for Damn Yankees really begins to gear up for next week's performances with rehearsals Monday and Wednesday. Monday's rehearsal is our Sitzprobe. This rehearsal is the first time the cast and musicians will be able to rehearse in the same room, and is always one of the most exciting rehearsals leading up to the opening of any show.

This year's Butter Braid Fundraiser kicked off last Tuesday evening at marching band rehearsal. I hear that sales are going well! More information below from our Fundraising Chair Heather Ribaric. Remember sales are due this Friday, 10/15.

Lastly, since there is no football game this week, the marching band does not have a performance on Friday. I am looking forward to our 4 upcoming rehearsals this and next week to finish up the show completely and continue to make it better as we look towards our performance at Marching MPA on November 6. Speaking of, we found out this week that the "Sound of the Wildcats performance at MPA will take place at 4 PM at Cypress Creek HS. An itinerary for the event will be posted on the Band website Monday, 10/11.

Have a great week!

Mr. Clemente

From the Band Booster President, Natalie Storch

Week of October 10, 2021

Hello everyone. Thank you so much to all of the volunteers who were so helpful and patient for the game on Thursday!!! We appreciate your dedication and wonderful outlook on a very long and soggy night. Your help is invaluable to the program and benefits all of the students so much. There is no game this Friday night, so enjoy the weekend. Please look at the remainder of the games to see how you can help. There are not that many left, but there are spots, and we would love to see you before the year is over.

Congratulations to Jazz I on the amazing music at the art festival yesterday. So many people commented on how great you sounded, and it was fun to see the performance!! Thank you to all of the band families and students who came out to support the band!

Senior night is October 22, and I sent an email to the senior parents-if you did not receive something from me, please email me at njstorch@yahoo.com, and I’ll send you more information.

We will have a band booster board meeting on October 25, and we will have a general meeting (which is for all parents/guardians/helpers) sometime before our winter concert, so stay tuned for details on that.

October 26 (Tuesday), we will have Trunk-R-Treat, where parents can decorate vehicles/bring candy for the students to trunk or treat in D Lot after marching band rehearsal that day (that Thursday is a game, so we’ll need to do it on Tuesday). Past years have been very creative and fun!!

Pride of the Wildcats - Winter Park Band Fleet Vehicle Support and improvement

We are very proud of our Operations side of the Winter Park Band. We have a dedicated group of parents that take the Winter Park Band & Color Guard to all their events. However, without the use of the large tractor trailer that transports our equipment to and from each marching band event and the small trailer for color guard the task would be next to impossible.

Through the years, the operations group has made many changes to the trailers to improve the functionality for the Winter Park Band. Historically, all of the monies have been raised through private contributions of a select groups of parents and through the Alumni Foundation. Because of this the need of a full fundraiser event to deflect the cost of the band operations was never really until now.

In effort to maintain our large trailer’s top-notch condition, we are planning to do some MAJOR repairs and improvements to the trailer that is now in its 15th year of service for WPHS band. Additionally, we need to either replace (preferable) the small trailer or make it road worthy again.

Some of the items on our list of improvements are costly, including:

  • Repairing some minor damage to larger trailer
  • Repainting the lower section of the large trailer
  • Rewrapping the upper section of the large trailer
  • Replace wheel bearings on front axle
  • Moving the back stairway to the back of the trailer
  • Replacing or repairing the small trailer
  • And other improvements to keep our kids and volunteers safe.

Since we are re-wrapping the large trailer, we will be selling sponsor spots on the larger trailer to defray the cost. There are 10 spots that are available for $1,000 each and the entire front of the trailer for $5,000. These opportunities are a great way to support the Winter Park Band and they are also tax deductible.

Please contact Keith Gavin at kgavin@sscands.com for further information on donations or to provide the goods or services to the improvements that are so desperately needed.

We will be also seeking volunteers to help at a Trailer Work- Days throughout the month of January. We will be repairing minor body damage, painting the trailer and removing the old logos. Please contact Keith Gavin @ kgavin@sscands.com if you can assist.

    PRIVATE LESSONS

Whether a student is learning a musical instrument to pursue a career in music, or simply for personal musical fulfillment and recreation, private lessons are one of the best investments that a parent can provide for their musical child. When working with a private teacher, students receive one-on-one instruction from a professional musician who specializes on that instrument.

Unlike a full band rehearsal experience, studying with a private teacher focuses in on the student’s individual needs. Students who study privately once a week from a professional musician are usually those who excel and find Band more enjoyable. These students frequently earn positions in honor groups like All-State and All-County, and make entry into our more advanced bands like Wind Symphony and Jazz Ensemble I. Some even go on to earn college scholarships, even if they are not majoring in music!

By following the link below, you will find a list of local private teachers. This list is not exhaustive, and there may be other individuals who are not on the list. If you know a private teacher who should be added (or would like to be deleted), please contact Mr. Clemente at michael.clemente@ocps.net.
