A Word from Principal Haynes
Greetings Parents,
I want to thank everyone for their patience and understanding during the emergency dismissal on Friday. As you know, the school was without AC and was also experiencing some electrical issues. As a result, the District made the call to suspend classes for the day. I made the parent link call at 9:56AM advising parents of the situation. By 11:10, all but 60 students remained on campus. All things considered, that was a good time to dismiss upwards of 450 students in the midst of us losing power with our radios and not being able to communicate with other staff members. So thank you again for your patience and understanding during that challenging moment.
Should an emergency dismissal like this happen again, we will be changing our process in how we dismiss the students. Please stay tuned for updated emergency dismissal procedures in the next family newsletter. It will also be sent home in written form and posted on our school website.
This emergency also emphasizes the importance of our having your CORRECT phone number and email address on file. The safety of your child and others depends on that. If your number has changed for any reason, please contact the front office to update your information.
This Wednesday, September 22nd from 8AM to 8:30AM, we are asking ALL dads/granddads/uncles/male role models to join us for "Dads Take Your Child to School Day"! We will have a photo booth to capture this moment! Also, if you are interested in working with us as a volunteer, please join us for a volunteer orientation that same day at 9AM in the Panther Cafe!
DON'T FORGET: two important forms were sent home. One is the "Parent Consent for School Health Related Services". In order for us to provide health related services, we need your permission. Please complete that form and return as soon as possible. Another form that went home is the "Parent Consent for COVID Testing" in the event that your child presents with COVID like symptoms, the school nurse is able to do a test with your permission. This is a service of convenience for you. If you have any questions about the test, please refer to the information sheet that also went home, or call to speak with the school nurse.
Please remember that BCPS has adopted a mask mandate. As such, ALL persons entering campus are expected to be masked. This includes staff, students, parents, and visitors. Please pay close attention to the information in the newsletter and visit our school website for the most up to date information!
Here are some ways you can support learning at home:
- Have your child go on iReady nightly (math one day, reading the next day)
- Have your child READ every night or practice recognizing letters/sight words
- Have your child TALK to you about what they read so you can see if they understand it
- Have your child practice their math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
- Have your child practice WRITING, both handwriting and writing information
- TALK to them about what they are doing in school
There is a LOT of information in this newsletter, but PLEASE read it thoroughly!!
Wishing you an AMAZING and BLESSED week ahead!!
Principal Haynes

Daily Health Screening!!
HEADPHONES FOR STUDENTS!!
If you have not purchased headphones for your child, PLEASE do so ASAP. In order for the children to work on iReady and other computer programs, they NEED headphones! You should purchase a good, steady pair that could last all year. Ear buds are not good for using at school, students need the kind that fits over their ears. Place the headphones in the ziploc bag to REMAIN at school so they don't get damaged.
Parent/School Compact
Parents, on August 29th, the Parent/School Compact was sent home with all students. You were to sign and return it to the school. If you have not done so, your child's teacher will be reaching out to send home another form for you to sign. A copy of the Parent/School Compact is also located on our school website. Thank you for partnering with us to help increase student achievement here at Village Elementary!!
