Who Do You Say I Am?

Scripture Block E

But Who Do You Say I Am?

In Matthew 16: 13-20, I get that Jesus is telling us that he is like our rock, friend or leader. He is like our rock because he is telling Peter that he is to build his kingdom for him, to Peter Jesus is like his rock. Jesus is my rock in my daily life because if I ever have a rough day, Jesus is the one I know I can turn to if I need support. I may be alone, but I always know Jesus is there supporting me. Jesus is also my friend because he listens to what I have to say and he tells me what I should do just like any other friend. If I ever need advice I know I can always seek for him to help me. Jesus is a great leader for all. He knows what is best for us and tells how to do something and he shows a lot through actions. He is a leader to me because through the way he lived his life, it makes me want to try to strive to be equally as perfect as Jesus is. Jesus is a huge leader who I look up to and who I want to be.

Insight From Reading the Footnotes

From reading the footnotes I learned that word "Church" only appears in the gospels. When they are talking about the Church they are referencing the community Jesus will gather. I learned that the purpose of having Peter to help is for him to be the witness to the Messiah. Peter is Jesus' right hand man for establishing the Church.

Additional Bible Passages

New Testament:

John 15: 12- 15

"This is my Commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greeter love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father."

Jesus is telling us that we should love one another like he loves us. I think that is very important to remember because sometimes it is hard to love people, especially if they are rude or have hurt you. Jesus loves everyone no matter what so he is telling us that we should be loving them the same way he does. The reading also reflects back to the first reading because he is talking about Jesus as a friend. Jesus is telling us that we are his friends and that he does not call us slaves because we know everything that he is told from his Father. Jesus is recognizing our friendship and is saying that he tells us everything he knows from his Father, he is not hiding anything from us, making him a good friend towards us.

Old Testament:

Isaiah 12: 2

"God indeed is my Salvation; I am confident and unafraid. For the Lord is my strength and my might, and he has been my salvation."

This shows that God is our rock or friend. It says that the Lord is my strength which can be taken as he is my rock. He is the one who gives me my strength and my might. I like this verse a lot because it is very relatable and powerful words. I like that it says "I am confident and unafraid" I like that part because we can learn that we too can be confident and unafraid if we put God as our #1 and have him be your salvation.

Audio Explanation

I was looking for songs that I thought really captured Jesus. I happened to come across the song "Look to You" and when I first listened to it I really enjoyed it. The tune and music of the song is very catchy and the lyrics of the song are very deep. The lyrics are talking about how we look up to Jesus because he is our leader and how he is always faithful towards us. It talks about how Jesus also leads us through the rough times and that no matter what happens he will come and help lead us out of our despair. I personally think that this song really depicts what I see Jesus as.

Christ in a Picture

In all four pictures I see Christ. I love sitting outside and looking at nature. I think that looking at nature is very peaceful and calming which is a lot like Jesus. Nature is the gift he gave us to remind us how much he loves us. Through nature he is gifting us with the beauty we are able to see. I see Christ through all the beauty and peacefulness of these pictures.
