Growing Successful Learners - Whakatipu Mātauranga
Matt's Message
Kia Ora Whānau
And just like that the end of Term one is upon us. While we started with some pretty hectic weather events the back end of the term has been awesome. Term 1 2023 was also a complete contrast to the COVID madness of Term 1 2022.
Over the last week I have been reflecting on Term one and against the goals we are working towards over 2023.
Our school currently has 3 high level goals for 2023:
- Create a physically and emotionally safe environment that nurtures Hauora/well-being for all.
- Support and develop all students and staff to grow as successful learners.
- Embrace the identity, language and culture of the students, staff, and whānau across our community.
At our board meeting this week, we outlined the specific actions that we have taken towards achieving these goals during Term one. The number of steps and actions we have taken has been significant. From the Launch of our new School Pou, Matua Tiepa's role supporting Te Reo and Te Ao Māori throughout the whole school and our learning support leaders work to enhance goal three, through to the start of our staff professional learning and development in writing supporting goal 2 and our new playground, the resilience project, celebration of learning day and targeted teacher aide support for learners to support goal one. We are proud of the start we have had to 2023.
Term 1 School Attendance
One of the other pleasing metrics that supports your children's learning is attendance at school. It is outstanding to see that we have achieved 91% attendance across our school for Term 1. Research highlights that regular attendance at school is crucial for academic success as it provides students with essential opportunities for learning, social interaction, and skill development, laying the foundation for their future success in life. So congratulations to our community for having our tamariki at school.
Thank you!
I would like to thank and acknowledge the number of parents who have supported sports teams and events, class trips and noho marae visits this term. We appreciate that it is not always easy to give your time, but without it trips and events like the ones we have had this term are just not possible.
I would also like to give a big shout out and thank you to our dedicated staff, from the office team through to our teacher aides and teaching staff they have given your children a great start to 2023. We are all looking forward to the school holidays to rest, recharge and then come back and do it all again in Term two!
Teacher Only Days
Just a reminder that tomorrow Thursday April 6th is a teacher only day. Our staff will be working with Dr Ian Hunter's team from the Writers Tool Box to grow their knowledge of teaching writing.
We also have a community wide teacher only day on Monday 24th April. This is where all of the Pāpāmoa schools will be coming together to work with and alongside our local iwi Ngā Potiki as we develop our knowledge of local history as part of the NZ histories curriculum.
We appreciate that teacher only days can be difficult for Whānau, but they are also critical to our teacher development and is not always possible to do this in school holidays. For our April 24th teacher only day this is a Ministry of Education supported initiative to support the NZ curriculum refresh.
I would like to wish you all a safe and happy easter and I look forward to connecting with you all again in Term 2.
Ngā mihi
Matt
