Letter from Principal Nelson
Howdy Cougars-
Today we were honored to have former AISD School Board Vice-President, Paul Saldana, speak to our Dual Language and PALS classes about public service and overcoming obstacles in life. Mr. Saldana is a product of AISD, he attended 10 schools during his career, and then donated his time and talents to the district after his successful career as the Chief of Staff for Mayor Gus Garcia. His message to our students was simple; find what you are passionate about and then get to work sharing it. This is our philosophy here in the hallowed halls of Smallville USA and why we go to great lengths throwing the kitchen sink at kids; we want to help them discover their passion. Whether it be band, science, math, athletics, or standing up for equal rights for all, we want our kids to have the freedom to discover their passion under our watchful eyes. We want to expose our students to as many subjects and schools of thought out there in order for them to make an informed decision as to what it is they wish to dedicate their time and effort to. We are beyond thankful that our very own teacher Shaun Hopkins set this up for our kids and allowed us all to hear Mr. Saldana’s words of wisdom.
Lettuce here at Small!!!
We are excited to announce a new partnership with Lettuce, Austin’s very own Urban Farm meal kit delivery service! They will be setting up one of their Urban Farms here on campus and will donate 10% of all the profits generated when customers use the coupon code (SMALL) to our Green Tech program. We will certainly be sending you more info in the near future, but until then, peruse over their website and take a look at some of their meal options. We love this partnership as they are 100% organic, zero-waste, and will help our students learn all about the commerce of farming.: https://lettuce.fm/pages/small
Fun Run Part Deux: Zombies Hate Fast Food
We are set for our 2nd annual Zombie Fun Run on Friday, November 17th. This being our 2nd year, we are raising the fundraising goal as well as the amount of fun our kids will have. This year we would like to raise $25,000 and have new incentives for our kiddos to inspire them to reach it: new Smallville running tees, Small water bottles and gear, and the Premium Zombie Pack which includes 4 front of the lunch line passes, 3 Elevator passes, and 2 “No Homework” passes. Also, this year we are going to let students form their own Survivor Cadres and pool their money to earn Open Gym time and Small After Dark (hide and seek, lock in, etc..) time so they can celebrate with their friends. As you can guess, more to come in regards to this amazing event.
Enjoy the weather this weekend with the ones you love and try to avoid the ACL traffic if you can.
