2016-17 Panther Basketball Recap
A heartbreaking 55-51 loss to the Tanner Rattlers in the 1st round of the Area Tournament brought the 2016-2017 Panther basketball season to a close. The Panthers finished with a 16-12 record. Mars Hill and Tanner split the two regular season games, with each team winning on its home court. In the Panthers’ win over the #1 ranked Rattlers at home, it gave Mars Hill its first home win against Tanner since January 11, 1997.
Six Panther seniors provided leadership this year. Sam Abernathy, Ike Alexander, Jonah Bretherick, Hayden Hibbett, Colton Knox and Bradley Thigpen led the way to the 12th season of at least 15 wins in the past 13 seasons. Sam Abernathy finished his career as the #10 All Time Panther Career scorer with 1179 points.
The Panthers also claimed the 2017 Lauderdale County Tournament Championship with a 57-50 win over Central. Three Panthers were named to the All Tournament team (Chandler McDaniel, Cade Parrish and Seth Swinea).
Special thanks to Head Coach Mike Mitchell and assistant coaches Grant Wright and Brett Vick. Coach Mitchell has now coached (boys and girls combined) 783 Mars Hill varsity basketball games. His record is 573 – 210.

Our Mars Hill AR program now has tests on 13 of Kyle Butt’s books written especially for children. Check the Mars Hill Bookstore or your child’s library at MHBS for these titles: Am I Ready to be Baptized?, Amazing Copies of God’s Design, Amazing Dinosaurs Designed by God, Dinosaurs Unleashed, God Made Plants, God Made Sea Creatures, God Made the World, God Made You, How Do You Know God is Real?, How Do You Know the Bible is from God?, I’m a Christian. What’s Next?, A Man Who Loved Money, and A Patient Man from Uz.
Also, there are tests on books of the Bible, except for Psalms, Proverbs, and Song of Solomon. We recommend that students wait until middle school to attempt these tests because they are more difficult.
#PrayForCole
Earlier in the school year the National Junior Honor Society had chosen St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to be the recipient of their fundraising for community service. After learning of Cole Kelley’s medical condition, members voted unanimously to redirect the funds to his family. The middle school organization had already raised over $850 this year. President Cooper Howton has announced the next bake sale is scheduled for February 13-14 during both middle and high school lunch periods. Please support this effort to help one of our own Mars Hill families.
MHBS will be hosting a blood drive in honor of Cole on Friday, February 10, 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. A sign-up sheet is in the Grades 5-12 office for those willing to give.

2016-17 Theme: Deeper
Thus says the Lord, "Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord." Jeremiah 9:23-24 (ESV)
