    Resources for All

Chasing Happiness in the Classroom during the Winter blahs & Mt. Mercy Update

To help shake off those winter blues and perk up our days -- here are some "Happiness Teaching Resources" for helping teachers take steps to help happiness thrive in our classroom for our students and staff provided by the November 2016 ASCD Education Update.

Authentic Happiness Website from the University of Pennsylvania

Learn about positive psychology and its application in the classroom through videos, research, and other free resources. Students can take the Authentic Happiness Inventory and additional questionnaires on grit, optimism, meaning in life, and more.

    Greater Good in Action

Find 48 science-based practices for building a meaningful life from the Greater Good Science Center at the University of California-Berkeley. The practices are broken down by categories, including "happiness," "gratitude," and "kindness," and are rated by difficulty, frequency, and duration.

    Positive Psychology in the Classroom

This blog series, written by Patty O'Grady, author of Positive Psychology in the Elementary Classroom, explores different measures of well-being and how they can be applied in the classroom.

"What's Step 1 for Teaching Happiness? Identifying the 23 Ingredients"

Teacher Chase Mielke shares 23 practices for fostering happiness in the classroom, which are anchored in Martin Seligman's PERMA model.

Message from Dawn Behan of Mt. Mercy University

Hello Teachers and Staff at Benton Community School District:

Thank you for your interest in earning a Master’s degree from Mount Mercy University! You will be eligible to earn this degree at a greatly reduced cost with a cohort group of 10 or more teachers/staff from Benton Community School District. We are excited about creating a collaborative partnership between Mount Mercy University and BCSD in which teachers/staff would be able to obtain a Master’s degree in Reading or Effective Teaching with some of the classes being taught within the district and some being taught at MMU’s Graduate Center. This graduate level work would qualify for lane advancement on the salary schedule within your district, and some programs (i.e., Reading) would lead to endorsement completion. Completion of this degree would take just over two years, and classes would be offered during the evenings and/or weekends and over the summer. If you have previously started a Master’s degree, learn how you can transfer credit into this Master’s program. We look forward to seeing you there!

Please come to an Information Session presented by faculty from the Master of Arts in Education program at Mount Mercy University. Refreshments will be provided!

    When: Monday, January 30, 2017 at 4:30 p.m.

Where: Mount Mercy University Graduate Center, 1650 Matterhorn Drive NE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52402

RSVP: Dr. Dawn Behan, Director of Graduate Program in Education and Professor of Education
