CVHS Counseling Weekly Update

New Year...Change your password!
Welcome Back and Happy New Year!
Finish the rest of the semester strong with making good academic choices! If you have assignments and homework to complete in your class, complete them, if you don't understand the concept, ask for clarification, take control of your learning and your grades and you will find success. You can do this!
If you are certain you are going to fail a class, please reach out to your counselor, they can work with you on how you are going to make up the credit. It might require a change in your second semester schedule, therefore, the sooner the better. If you are a Senior, you might need to take credit recovery outside of the school day, therefore, it is important to please reach out to your counselor.
Job Fair opportunity!!! This just came across your counselor's desk so we are passing the info along.
My name is Nicola Oddo and I am a member of the National training team for Little Caesars. I am reaching out with this message to ask if we may possibly promote our upcoming restaurant job fairs and current job openings to your Student body.
Our job fairs during the month of January are scheduled to take place on Wednesday, January 13, and the following week on Wednesday, January 20, both days from 11am - 4pm. They'll take place at all Metro-Detroit store locations.
This opportunity of employment not only leads to newly acquired work skills, but also at a time, as such will allow individuals to earn steady, competitive income along with flexible work hours in a fun, energetic atmosphere which possibly for some can prove to be more helpful than we may imagine.
Furthermore, the opportunities at hand assure that all jobseekers would receive acknowledgment for the work they produce which tends to lead colleagues into obtaining further great opportunities within our company.
Seniors – Remember to order your Class of 2021 senior apparel now through January 22, 2021

6 New Year's Resolutions for High School Freshmen
1. “I will improve my academic performance.”
Rather than simply vowing to raise your grades, set a specific, measurable goal. Making – and keeping – a resolution to study before each math test, for example, is much more specific and measurable than saying, “I will raise my math grade.” Whatever resolution you choose, make sure it is relevant to your specific situation.
2. “I will prepare for challenging high school courses.”
Challenging high school coursework, such as AP and accelerated classes, can boost your chances of admissions at a competitive college or university. So, do your best in your current courses but begin to think about which classes you enjoy most. Review your school’s course catalog for more challenging classes in the same fields. For example, if you love biology and excel in it, you might take AP biology in the future. What prerequisites will you need to satisfy in the meantime?
3. “I will explore my passions.”
Use your time in high school to explore a wide variety of activities and subjects. Take diverse courses, try a new extracurricular, or become involved with an academic/career organization outside school. For instance, pursue a part-time job or a volunteer position that will allow you to experience a career that is interesting to you. It might even lead to a possible college major or lifelong hobby.
4. “I will begin to study for the ACT/PSAT/SAT.”
Freshman will take the PSAT 9 this Spring (and the SAT and ACT your junior or senior year), it is never too early to begin familiarizing yourself with these exams. While the ACT, PSAT, and SAT were created to assess what you have learned over the course of your high school career, understanding the content and format of the tests can be invaluable. For example, how long is each exam? Is there a penalty for guessing? Check out www.collegeboard.org and www.khanacademy.org for more information and practice.
5. “I will start researching colleges.”
The winter of your freshman year is an ideal time to begin researching prospective colleges and universities. Just as schools wish to ensure that you are a great fit for their campus, you should also search for a college that is the perfect fit for you. Does the college offer majors that you are interested in? What about extracurricular activities? If you are undecided on your major and future career, does the school offer a well-rounded education that will allow you to take a variety of classes before declaring your major?
6. “I will remember to enjoy high school.”
Whether in person or attending virtually, high school is a time to learn, explore, and live before you enter the wider world of adulthood. Take advantage of this time, and enjoy it! Once you are allowed, attend homecoming, go to the games, play a sport, join a club (even if held virtually), and study with friends. Even if it doesn’t seem like it now, this time will speed by quickly!
