BRMS Awarded "Schools to Watch" Distinction Once Again!
BRMS was privileged to host a group of educators on Friday, February 21, to demonstrate why our school is worthy of redesignation as a School to Watch (designations are for a period of three years). The visiting committee members had an opportunity to evaluate our current programs and instruction. Additionally, students, teachers, parents, and administrators met with the committee to answer questions and highlight the myriad of educational opportunities available to students. We are proud to say that once again, Black River Middle School is recognized as a School to Watch! Thank you to the BRMS teachers, staff, students, and community for making this award possible.
40th Annual Science Fair Goes On as Scheduled!
On Saturday, March 7, nearly 400 students, along with supporting family and friends, descended on Black River Middle School for the 40th Annual Chester Science Fair. Participants in all grades shared their projects with visiting judges and the public at large. In addition, attendees had numerous opportunities to experience science first hand at exhibits featuring marine life to touch, reptiles to interact with, household items to litmus test, seeds to plant, a police robot to maneuver, model cars to drag race, and a police dog that demonstrated why crime doesn't pay! Many thanks to all those who work so hard to make this special day a celebration of learning and adventure, especially this year as the public health challenge emerged. We look forward to next year's event on March 6, 2021!
BRMS Students Attend Tech Expo for Digital Learning Day
On February 27th, Mrs. Pohan and Mr. Gray had the privilege of taking 15 BRMS students to the third annual Tech Expo in Long Valley. The students were able to participate in numerous non-competitive activities including a drone package delivery challenge, robot obstacle course, pumpkin chunkin' catapult construction, 3-D printed boat penny challenge, and many others. BRMS students paired up with their peers from other area schools including Mendham Township, Mendham Borough, Randolph, and Long Valley to complete the challenges. It was a fun way to celebrate Digital Learning Day!
Inspiration Cafe Features Rutgers Head Coach Jim McElderry
On February 28, the BRMS Inspiration Cafe featured a presentation by Jim McElderry, the Rutgers Men's Head Soccer Coach. McElderry, who led Fordham to three NCAA appearances, including the tournament quarterfinals in 2017, and two Atlantic 10 Championships over the last five seasons, is only the seventh head coach in the 80-year history of the Rutgers men's soccer program. McElderry's experience includes playing professionally for the New York Fever and the Long Island Rough Riders, two A-League teams, as well as the New York Freedoms for four seasons. The BRMS students had a wonderful time learning about Mr. McElderry's career journey and how he wishes that every person can find a profession that uses their passion and love for life.
