At that time, you will also be given your items from inside the classroom and yearbooks. We are pleased that this opportunity can provide some closure to an unusual school year. Note: If you were not able to make your designated time, please use the evening option or Friday as an alternative. Personal items will be centrally located and will take longer to retrieve than if attending during your assigned time. Lines could be very long during make-up times; please adhere to your original time slot if at all possible.
During this time, we will ask that all participants adhere to the following guidelines:
· Teachers will be socially distanced and standing in spots marked 6 feet apart and remain in their spot unless collecting an iPad from a vehicle or delivering personal items to a vehicle.
· Students and families must remain in their vehicles at all times.
· Exchange of gifts, hugs, high-fives, etc. are prohibited, as this will keep everyone safe and the line moving.
We look forward to seeing you as we wrap up another successful, albeit challenging school year. We are proud of your efforts and accomplishments!

Orchestra Concert
“The Eastgate and Gateway 6th Grade Center students worked hard this semester preparing music for Spring concerts. When those concerts got cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the students joined forces to create a Virtual Concert featuring 6th graders from all four feeder patterns in the North Kansas City School District. Mrs. Clayton and Mrs. Tuwei led their students in playing Conquest by Jeremy Woolstenhulme (String Basics, Book 1, 1st Edition, Copyright 2010, Kjos Publishing).”
This was no easy task, yet the students and teachers rose to the occasion to create an awesome performance!

Genius Hour
Genius Hour
If your child could have the opportunity to learn anything they wanted to in school, what would it be? We will be launching our virtual Genius Hour on May 5th. Your students have participated in Genius Hour while attending elementary school, so this will not be new to them, but we want to provide you with some background information and ways that you might be able to provide support.
This video describes the goal of Genius Hour:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMFQUtHsWhc
This video outlines the process that we will use to guide your students through this learning experience.
http://thelaunchcycle.com/Cycle/
You can support you student by:
Helping with the brainstorming and narrowing their topic
Helping them navigate databases and articles that have quality information (Mrs. Ellison has linked many reliable sources to her library website.)
Helping them identify which of the four pathways would work best with their topic
Helping them come up with a plan for their prototype
Helping them gather materials
Examples of ideas:
Plan a week of healthy meals, or create a video cooking show.
Research a topic of choice, then share by creating art, a 3D model, a piece of writing, music, a poster, or a public service announcement.
Plan a fun PE class for the family.
Design a zoo habitat for a favorite animal with materials around the house like legos.

ELA Book Clubs - Theme: Diversity
Below, you will find a brief summary of each book available. If you have any questions regarding any of the books, please email your child's ELA reading teacher.
Front Desk
Front Desk: Mia Tang has a lot of secrets. Number 1: She lives in a motel, not a big house. Every day, while her immigrant parents clean the rooms, ten-year-old Mia manages the front desk of the Calivista Motel and tends to its guests. Number 2: Her parents hide immigrants. And if the mean motel owner, Mr. Yao, finds out they've been letting them stay in the empty rooms for free, the Tangs will be doomed. Number 3: She wants to be a writer. But how can she when her mom thinks she should stick to math because English is not her first language? It will take all of Mia's courage, kindness, and hard work to get through this year. Will she be able to hold on to her job, help the immigrants and guests, escape Mr. Yao, and go for her dreams?
Out of My Mind
Out of My Mind: Melody is not like most people. She cannot walk or talk, but she has a photographic memory; she can remember every detail of everything she has ever experienced. She is smarter than most of the adults who try to diagnose her and smarter than her classmates in her integrated classroom - the very same classmates who dismiss her as mentally challenged because she cannot tell them otherwise. But Melody refuses to be defined by cerebral palsy. And she's determined to let everyone know it - somehow. In this breakthrough story, reminiscent of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, from multiple Coretta Scott King Award-winner Sharon Draper, readers will come to know a brilliant mind and a brave spirit who will change forever how they look at anyone with a disability
Ghost
Ghost: Running. That's all that Ghost (real name Castle Cranshaw) has ever known. But never for a track team. Nope, his game has always been ball. But when Ghost impulsively challenges an elite sprinter to a race -- and wins -- the Olympic medalist track coach sees he has something: crazy natural talent. Thing is, Ghost has something else: a lot of anger, and a past that he is trying to outrun. Can Ghost harness his raw talent for speed and meld with the team, or will his past finally catch up to him?
Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus
Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus: Aven Green loves to tell people that she lost her arms in an alligator wrestling match, or a wildfire in Tanzania, but the truth is she was born without them. And when her parents take a job running Stagecoach Pass, a rundown western theme park in Arizona, Aven moves with them across the country knowing that she’ll have to answer the question over and over again. Her new life takes an unexpected turn when she bonds with Connor, a classmate who also feels isolated because of his own disability, and they discover a room at Stagecoach Pass that holds bigger secrets than Aven ever could have imagined. It’s hard to solve a mystery, help a friend, and face your worst fears. But Aven’s about to discover she can do it all . . . even without arms.
George
George: When people look at George, they think they see a boy. But she knows she's not a boy. She knows she's a girl. George thinks she'll have to keep this a secret forever. Then her teacher announces that their class play is going to be Charlotte's Web. George really, really, REALLY wants to play Charlotte. But the teacher says she can't even try out for the part . . . because she's a boy. With the help of her best friend, Kelly, George comes up with a plan. Not just so she can be Charlotte - - but so everyone can know who she is, once and for all.

Virtual Instruction: A Balancing Act
The Balancing Act
We have our first week under our belt and it has been a week full of adult learning, too! As parents, you are learning a lot about how your child learns best, content, strategies, scheduling, etc. Families are also learning how to balance being home school teachers, completing your own work, addressing household needs, and managing family climate with all members together for an abundance of time. It’s a major balancing act for sure!
Like you, staff have been adult learners and are managing a balancing act, as well. The eLearning that you and students see is a result of numerous hours of preparation and interactive conferencing for professional collaboration. Virtual learning also includes monitoring student engagement and work, providing feedback, and parent communication. Like parents who work from home, teachers are balancing their eTeaching jobs with their own household/family responsibilities including providing support for their own children who are learning from home. While technology and electronic communication is available 24-7, they physically are not as they, too, are on this journey to find balance. Thank you for understanding there may be periods of time especially in the evenings and on weekends where they may not be available.
We appreciate all that you are doing and hope the flexible model is helping you with your balancing act. We appreciate your understanding and flexibility as well.

PowerSchool - Grades
Update: The district has chosen to display student grades as complete/incomplete within the PowerSchool platform. As I've shared with my own child, grades are just a number or a letter. It is the learning that is important. He, too, is very frustrated that he is not getting "credit" for the work. What I reminded him was that just like any muscle, the brain must be exercised. Daily, he is working out to stay in shape for baseball, because he knows, when everything is said and done, he will be expected to immediately take the field and perform. I explained that math, writing, reading, and other content areas will expect the same level of performance. So while you may not be given a number or a letter at the top of an assignment, you are keeping your mind sharp and will be ready to take the field - academic or other.
Many of our parents are familiar with PowerSchool, however if you are not, please use these directions to create a parent account. This will allow you to review your student's progress regarding completing the assigned work.

Microsoft Teams and Canvas Conferencing Platforms
Student Initiated Meetings
As students are becoming more familiar with the Microsoft Teams program and the conference feature in Canvas, it appears they are initiating communication with each other. Just as a textbook or other school tool or device, both Teams and Canvas are meant to be used as platforms for educational purposes. While we truly understand how hard it is to be away from friends, especially at this age, students should not be setting up meetings or conferences to chat with friends through Microsoft Teams or Canvas Conferences.
Language and Content
It has also been noticed by a few teachers and several parents that a few students are not displaying the Grizzly expectations: Respect, Responsible, and Safe. While using the Chat feature or posting online in a discussion board, it is the expectation that all students use ONLY school appropriate words and content.
To encourage good digital citizenship, we have reviewed expectations with students, Dr. Kroenke has addressed the expectation through video during morning announcements and often mentions the expectation again following her read aloud, teachers have set norms and expectations within the virtual classroom community, and we will begin posting student-friendly PSAs about being a good digital citizen.
Morning Announcements with Video
When it is determined that a student has posted something that is not displaying respectful language, the parent will be contacted by the teacher and an administrator will be notified. If the issue persists, an administrator will contact the parent to determine next steps.
We do want students to find ways to connect with friends, and as a family we encourage you to explore other social media avenues your child could "meet up" or "hangout" with his/her friends. Thank you very much for your support in monitoring the use of both platforms to ensure they are used as they are expected in the NKC School District.
Grading During Virtual Learning
We have completed week-one and are moving into week two of eLearning. Toward the end of last week teachers, administrators and families engaged in great conversations to determine how the first few days were going and how we can make the experience better for all moving forward. Below are some common themes that were part of those conversations. We wanted to share some thoughts to provide clarity and understanding as we learn together.
Workload
As we are one week into our new teaching and learning environment, we want to be sensitive to the academic demands we are placing on students. We are aiming to ensure students do not lose ground, learn 4th quarter standards, all while not adding stress. This is a difficult goal to achieve. We’ve had conversations with families that are describing far too much schoolwork and others asking for much more....and several in-between. We are asking teachers to be responsive to student and family needs during this difficult time. We want to find as close to a “just right” fit for each student given the situation and give students some flexibility to complete work as they are understanding it. If you are needing anything in regard to help, support, workload, etc. reach out to your child’s teacher. We will accommodate the best we can. We want to make this experience as positive as possible; meeting individuals where they are is a huge step to ensure that happens.
Video Conferencing
While unable to meet students face-to-face in the confines of the traditional school building, we are utilizing the tools at our disposal to best replicate the delivery of instruction. NKCSD is utilizing Microsoft Teams as the main vehicle for interacting with students. The video conferencing tool within the program is the district’s preferred method to converse with students. We are asking teachers to post a schedule (to the best of their ability) as to when they would be video conferencing with their classes/students and/or notify parents/guardians via email. If you have questions about video conferencing or wish to not have your student participate feel free to reach out to your student’s teacher or an administrator with any questions you have.
Grading
As it pertains to grading, the bottom line is that we do not want kids to have their grades negatively affected by this circumstance and eLearning. We have lost many of the controls of traditional school such as time, resources, guaranteed interaction with teachers, etc. Because of that, our focus is turning towards effort/engagement as opposed to mastery of content. While some families and staff do not have consistent access to what is needed to guarantee a system that viably delivers content, we cannot judge students as if that was the case. Given that, here is what grading will look like for the duration of eLearning:
- Assignments will be posted through Canvas
- Teachers will assess student work as “Complete” or “Incomplete” in Canvas. Canvas will be your best option for determining if your child has completed his/her assignments.
- Late work will be accepted for a “Complete” or “Incomplete” marking through the end of the grading period
- Teachers will give feedback to kids as far as mastery to push for true learning /understanding of content during this time.
- As always, if you have any questions, reach out to your student’s teachers or an administrator to work through anything that comes up
- If you are not already a parent observer on your students Canvas, please click Canvas - Parent Observer directions copy.pdf
This is truly a unique time. This pandemic is affecting every family, staff, and student in a different way. Things that are certain today, may not be tomorrow. That is our new reality. We want to partner with you, and you with us to make this experience as positive is at can be for all. We commit to doing our best for you and your student/s during this time!

Music News
Grizzly Vocal Music Families,
We have had so much fun learning and growing with your students this school year! We wanted to share a few updates with you about Vocal Music for this semester. For Quarter 3, students were given the opportunity to choose whether they would like to be a part of a performance (choir) class or be part of a general music class where they are still learning and experiencing music, but without having to be on stage. So far, students are thriving in this new environment!
Students who have chosen performance class are working toward an in-class performance in small groups or as soloists. Students who have chosen general music are working to create their own original songs. In unit two of Quarter 3 students will choose between a Musical/Show Choir performance unit or a “Music through the Ages” general music unit.
In Quarter 4 there will be a chorale unit where we will progress toward a public performance on the evening of Monday, April 27th at Staley High School. We will be able to give you more information on the General Music unit of Quarter 4 at a later date.
Our goal is to create an environment where our students can grow and thrive both as people and as musicians. We are so excited to give your students this opportunity to have more autonomy in their music classes!

Character Trait - Responsible
We are beginning a new character trait this week. While we want to continue to have a positive attitude, to achieve our goals, and show respect, we also want to be show character by being responsible. A person who is responsible meets the demand of duty, is accountable for the consequences of his or her choices, pursues excellence and exercises self-control. Being responsible includes showing perseverance, initiative, effort, and goal setting. Demonstrating responsibility in all areas of life is an important part of being successful and becoming a person of character.

Staff/Student Relations Video
North Kansas City Schools recognizes the impact positive relationships at school can have on the success of students. We will work with students to identify appropriate boundaries in those relationships, focusing on school board policies related to bullying, hazing and student/staff interactions. A training video will help provide guidance on behavior expectations and how to respond when appropriate boundaries are not maintained. Providing a safe, welcoming learning environment for all students is a top priority. This instruction will help outline how respectful behavior creates a school culture that fosters positive relationships and enhances educational outcomes for all students. If you have any questions, please feel free to call your child’s school and the staff will be happy to assist you.

Second Step Curriculum Begins Monday
Our mission at Gateway includes educating the whole child, academically, socially, and emotionally. Each week our students and teachers participate in class meetings. These meetings help build community and understanding. We want your child to be successful in school, and that means going beyond the basics. Excelling in academic classes is important, but students also need to know how to learn, make good decisions, handle strong emotions, and get along with others.
This week, we'll begin the Second Step Middle School Program, which focuses on skills and concepts that are designed to help students both in and out of school. These include:
Mindsets and Goals: Students learn about ways to grow their brains and get smarter, along with research-based strategies for achieving goals and handling difficult situations.
Values and Friendships: Students learn to identify their personal values and use those values to make good decisions and build strong, positive relationships.
Thoughts, Emotions, and Decisions: Students learn the positive role emotions play in their lives, how to handle unhelpful thoughts and strong emotions, and specific strategies for calming down.
Serious Peer Conflicts: Students learn how to identify and avoid serious conflicts, resolve conflicts that can't be avoided, think about other people's perspectives, and help stop bullying and harassment at school.
Each week, we will include a brief statement sharing the topic that will be discussed during class meetings (located in Week at a Glance section). The topic will span a two-week time frame. Also included is a Family Question to spark conversation at home.
ParenTeenConnect.org, a free website for parents and their teens created by the makers of the Second Step Program, is a great resource for middle school families. It provides expert advice and practical tools for dealing with real parent-teen issues.
If you have any questions about the Second Step Middle School Program, please do not hesitate to contact our counselors, Lisa Hayden and Shauna Pope, for more information. Thank you for supporting your child in learning the skills and concepts that lead to success in school and in life.
Character Trait of the Month
Each month we will highlight one of eight character traits. This month's trait is Positive Attitude.
A positive attitude can affect your life favorably in all areas, improving your mental and physical health. People with a positive outlook, view life, challenges, and the situations they go through, with confidence and are sure they can deal with them. People with a positive attitude will not let failure or obstacles stand in their way, and will always try to find ways to overcome them. Such a person would rather learn from past mistakes and move on. A person with a positive state of mind does not dwell on the problems and difficulties of the past, and does not let them dictate his or her life. People who maintain a positive approach to life situations and challenges are able to move forward more constructively than those who become stuck in a negative attitude. People who possess this attitude are easier to get along with, are happy, and they spread joy around them.
Students and staff who demonstrate the trait throughout the month will be awarded a certificate. Each home room teacher will choose 1 student who exemplifies the trait through their words and actions to be celebrated during a brief gathering at the end of the month.

Attendance
School Attendance
School attendance for school-age children is compulsory by Missouri Law, therefore regular attendance is expected of each student enrolled in the North Kansas City School District. As a public school in Missouri, we adhere to the guidelines set forth by MSIP 5 (Missouri School Improvement Plan). State guidelines deem attendance rates of 95% or better as necessary for optimal learning and rates below 90% as unsatisfactory. When a student's attendance falls below 90%, the school will notify the parent/guardian.
Students should strive to maintain a good attendance record. There is a direct relationship between school attendance, academic achievement and success in school. Frequent absence of a student from the classroom disrupts the continuity of the learning process, and places undo stress on the child and family. Missouri utilizes a school’s attendance rate as part of the accreditation process for schools and districts. We know it is of great importance to the parents and patrons of the North Kansas City School District that our school and district remain highly accredited. Optimal attendance is an integral part of that endeavor.
Partial-day absences, late arrivals, and early check-outs count against a child’s attendance. We ask that parents avoid scheduling appointments, out of town events, vacations, etc. during school. If your child has an important appointment that cannot be scheduled outside of school hours, please try to have your child at school before and after the appointment as much as possible. Please avoid checking them out early after you have visited for lunch or an event during the school day.
Attendance is closely monitored with monthly reports and parents will be notified and asked to address attendance concerns. By board policy and law, on-going concerns may meet criteria to be reported to legal authorities.
Please inform the school by 8:45 a.m. on the day of your child’s absence if your child will not be in attendance. If your child will miss several days, you only need to call the first day and state the days of absence. If no contact is made by 8:45 a.m., every attempt will be made to reach a parent or emergency contact to verify the reason for the absence to ensure the child’s safety and parent awareness of their child’s whereabouts.
School attendance is an important part of a student's success. Each day throughout the year is important and valued. It is impossible to truly make-up the entire learning experience. Teamwork, question and answer sessions, individual and small group discussions with the teacher, and encore classes are just a few of the valuable experiences that cannot be “sent home.” In working together as a team, we can help to make sure your child has a successful year. As Grizzlies, we strive to make each and every day count!

My Payments Plus Update
This information will also be sent home through backpack mail on Tuesday, September 3.
North Kansas City Schools is aware that many families are experiencing difficulty when trying to pay for Risk Management online through MyPaymentsPlus. The district is working with the vendor to ensure the product functions as expected. In the meantime, families are encouraged to log in to MyPaymentsPlus and then select “Return to Classic MyPayments” on the lower right hand side of the dashboard. This selection appears to allow users to choose the Risk Management payment option under “Other School Fee’s” and fill out the form with no issues.
Given the difficulties many have experienced, NKC Schools will continue to accept payment for the Risk Management Program through September 15 as an activity option, after the deadline parents will have to turn in the device at the school and have technology thoroughly inspect the device before they can pay for the insurance. Payments can also be made at the school with the paper form signed until this extended deadline as well. For more details about the Risk Management Program for both iPads and MacBooks, visit https://www.nkcschools.org/Domain/142 and scroll down the page just a bit.
Payment for other activities will remain available through the regularly scheduled dates.

Welcome!
Many students stopped by on July 29th and 30th to tour the people, complete registration, and pick up their schedules/team assignments. If you were unable to make it on these days, please feel free to call the office for the information or stop by Gateway Tuesday, August 13th, after 12:00 pm.
Each week, a newsletter will be emailed to the email addresses we have on file. The newsletter is updated, with new information on top. We purposefully do not delete previous week's information, as it will allow parents/guardians to search for information if needed.

Car Rider Line
At the secondary level, parents are not asked to place a name placard in the window. We trust that students are able to safely identify their ride/driver. Also, parents do not need to notify the office regarding a change in transportation. We ask that you communicate this to your child at home, prior to leaving for school. In the event of an emergency, and transportation needs do change, please call the office, when possible, before 2:00PM. After 2:00PM, we will do our best to get the message to the student, but cannot guarantee that it will be received in time due to the high volume of visitors and phone calls in the office at that time.
In the afternoon, the pick up line will run a double line. For safety reasons, we do not allow students to walk down the sidewalk to cars or load past the crossing lane. We appreciate your patience and understanding with this process. Our number one goal is to keep all kids safe! Please see the diagram below for more information.
