School Closure Update 03/31/20
Good morning-
As we continue our school closure, I will continue to communicate with you as information becomes available.
Below are some bullet points of information I can share with you now:
- Chromebook Checkout, Instrument, &/or PE clothes Pick up - We will offer a chromebook checkout & item pick up again this week. On Wednesday & Thursday (04/01 & 04/02) from 10-1pm. For instrument/PE clothes, please email the name of your student along with item description/locker number. For all items, pull up in front of the school and a staff member will come check in with you to get the items you need
- Next round of student work/activities - We’ll put packets together to have ready to be mailed out Friday of Spring Break (04/10). These will be available with an online link through Clever & on our website Monday, 04/13/20. During our online staff meeting, it was discussed that we should expect students to work about 20-30 minutes per subject per day on average. That would be no more than 3 hours throughout the day on the materials. For some content areas, there is quite a bit of material to choose from in the packets/online folders.
- Are students expected to print these out? - Our current online packets will not let students work directly on them by typing. Students can write their answers to the questions on a piece of paper or make a blank document in their own drive to type out answers. The intent is to not require them to print, but putting a heading on their paper and hand writing answers on lined paper or typing on a document would work. Students can also create a google doc for answers using a split screen and type as they go by adding another window. Students may email this work to their teachers for feedback using their phone to take a picture or by creating & sharing a google doc.
- Extended closure - Google Classroom - If the closure is extended past April 27th, we will want to work on some new learning material that will be beneficial for the students to access before the next grade level. Teachers will use the Google Classroom platform to share information with students and receive student completed work. This might look like online videos, resources, websites, and assignments/tasks to complete and submit. I wanted to give you a heads up so you think ahead in planning if it’s needed. We will still have packet options available for students for this next stage. Your son/daughter might have teachers that are already using Google Classroom to communicate resources, so continue to check that out. At this time, training is taking place for teachers to get this set up for all students. Using this platform will streamline materials and work for students - even if a printed copy is needed. Please continue to have your student check their Google Classroom for updates and the most recent information.
- Grading/Term 3 - We currently are still in conversation on how grading will look. As you know, quarter (term) grades are more like progress reports for students at the secondary level. We do have a few classes that change at the quarter, but it is not typical. Therefore, we are waiting for further direction & communication regarding the end of year grades and how that will look. For now, I would not use Skyward or Family Access to check on student progress. Communicate with teachers through email and have your student continue to check Google Classroom for updates.
