WELCOME FROM DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS, ROBERT FOREMAN
Mustang Staff,
It has been a great winter sports season with tons of success. The swim team wrapped up their season two weeks ago with a trip to the State Tournament. 6 individuals and 2 relays represented Mustang this year at State and Hannah Hamilton lead the way placing 7th in the 200 butterfly.
The Bronco Wrestling Team made history by bringing home a Runner-Up Trophy at Dual State, a regional championship and this past weekend earned the Runner-Up trophy at the OSSAA Wrestling State Championships. The Broncos crowned 4 individual state champions: Judson Rowland, Tate Picklo, John Wiley and Tucker Owens...all 2X State Champions.
After successful regular seasons, our basketball teams competed last weekend in regionals. The Broncos finished their season at 9-14 and the Lady Broncos are still in the hunt as they advanced to the Area Tournament and play this Thursday. They are two wins away from a return to the state tournament.
Our spring sports are set to begin. It will be a fun spring season and we are excited about all of the success to come for these teams. As always, we hope everyone will take the time to get out and support our athletes. Go Broncos!

BASEBALL PREVIEW
The Bronco Baseball Team has been busy in the off season with more than just preparation for baseball games. They volunteered with the softball team to work the Special Olympics Christmas Party at the First United Methodist Church. They served food, played games, and danced at the party. It was a great event for the players and the special Olympic participants. They also participated in and won the FILL THE BUS toy drive competition for the High School. They donated over 150 toys to the toy drive and got to go to the fire department to help load the bus. Brandon Mathes did a great job organizing the baseball team’s toy drive for this.
The varsity team returns 4 starters from last year's team, all of which are still underclassmen. There are just 7 seniors on the team but they exemplify great character, good leadership and great work ethic. This group does not shy away from hard work. The team lifts 4 days a week before practice and the senior group shows a tremendous work ethic which will ultimately lead to a successful year.
The team will have a lot of underclassmen in important roles this year. The coaching staff hopes the young players understand they don't have to be superstars but simply execute their job or duty within the confines of the team's system. If they can buy into the offensive philosophy of “individual results do not matter” they will have success.
Coach Patterson is excited about the team and talent. He believes the season will be about responding to adversity and playing through the highs and lows of the season. The coaching staff will push to have them playing their best baseball at the end of the year.

SLOW PITCH SOFTBALL PREVIEW
During the off season, coach Davis and Coach Casarez have been handling most of the duties for the softball team while Coach Darity fulfills her obligations at her previous school. The girls have been in an off-season weight lifting program, building team unity and working on their individual skills.
The slow pitch team returns six players from last season including 3 starters and add 5 incoming freshmen to the mix. The coaches look forward to seeing the seniors and upperclassmen provide consistency with their leadership both on and off the field. One of their main goals as a coaching during the off season was to build camaraderie and give the players an understanding of the value of team unity. The coaches are excited about what they have seen so far and look forward to seeing how this translates on the playing field! The coaching staff is excited about the talent the 10 underclassmen bring and hope that they will gain valuable experience early but have patience and understand that the season is a marathon and not a sprint.
Overall the season will be competitive, fun and the staff looks forward to seeing improvement every week and hope to have the team playing their best ball in late April when playoffs roll around!

BOYS SOCCER PREVIEW
The boys soccer team won their summer league this past summer with a record of 10-0-2. They also got to travel to Iowa for the 4th summer in a row for a summer showcase and left with a 4-1 record from the games there. This is the best record they have had at that showcase.
The team graduated 7 starters from their semi final team in 2019 and return 3. Those 3 along with a few that were injured will be a solid group of juniors and seniors that will be looked at to lead this year's team. Several of these guys have been a part of the most successful boys soccer teams in program history (2017, 2019). They know what it takes to compete at a high level and will push the other guys to make sure they are doing what is needed on and off the field. There will be a couple of younger players that will step in and be expected to "put the ball in the back of the net". When their number is called they will need to be ready to embrace the challenges ahead of them. In the JV and JV2 teams, the coaches would like to see those players learn the system and continue to develop so in the coming years they will be ready when their time comes.
When asked about the upcoming season Coach Homer had this to say: " I'm excited! This group has been a blast to coach since summer ball. They are fast, play well together and make the game look easy at times. I expect this group to pick up right where the groups in front of them left off and compete for their district title and make a deep run into the playoffs."
When asked about the program and coaching staff in general, Coach Homer said, "Our program as a whole has seen tremendous success over the past several seasons. Since 2017, our JV2, JV, and Varsity teams have gone a combined record of 106 wins 19 loses 11 ties. I think that says a ton about the coaches we have in place, the players that have come through our program, and the ability of those guys to show up when it matters. Next man up is a mentality we have latched on to and continues to be a staple for us."

2020 SENIOR GIRLS SOCCER PLAYERS
GIRLS SOCCER PREVIEW
The girls soccer team had a great off season. They've been working hard since the start of the school year continuing where they left off at the end of last season. The Lady Bronco Soccer team is the two time state runner up and have their eyes set on nothing less than a State Championship this season.
The team returns 8 starters and 9 varsity players. They will add a couple of new players to the varsity roster and the coaches hope they will fit in well to the program and the style of play they have. The senior group has hearts of determination and will not let anything get in the way of what they want to accomplish. They have set a very high standard for the younger players in the program and have an expectation of hard work for everyone! As the younger players use this hard work to develop their skill along with their confidence they will become an integral part of this successful program.
The coaching staff and team have one goal to accomplish and they plan to do whatever is necessary to achieve that goal!
BOYS TENNIS PREVIEW
The boys tennis team is returning 3 starters that were all State Qualifiers last year. Three players from the JV team will replace seniors that graduated last spring but they all had quite a bit of playing time last year. The top six players include 1 senior, 3 juniors and 2 sophomores. This season and the future are bright for the boys tennis team.
The one senior on varsity, Adam Spencer, is a hard worker, motivated, and helps keep other players on the right path leading towards a successful season. Adam recently signed with Oklahoma Baptist University to play tennis next year!
The team in general worked very hard in pre season to prepare for the upcoming season. Coach Allen and Coach Jones are expecting them to be a very competitive team this season!

2020 Varsity Girls Tennis and Coaches
GIRLS TENNIS PREVIEW
The girls Tennis Team put in a lot of work this summer competing in our summer doubles tournament. This tournament is unique because they are always switching partners. This was beneficial because they were continuously adapting their playing style to better compete with their current partner.
The coaches are excited to have three returning starters this year. The three new players joining our varsity are less experienced but two of them were alternates from the varsity team last year and will settle into their new role like veterans of the position.
There are two seniors this year who have been leaders for the past two years. This is their first year to be on varsity and have set a great example for the younger players. These two girls “served” the team from the sidelines last season and are now in a position to fill another role on the team. The coaching staff has given these two many responsibilities as leaders and they have never let the coaches or the team down and the coaches are thankful to have these two exceptional leaders.
The younger athletes have big shoes to fill. The team has quite a few younger players that will be playing in high caliber tournaments. These players will have a lot of pressure on them throughout the year. The coaching staff will work hard to help prepare them for this challenge. The biggest piece of advice Coach Hurst has given these girls is to give all they have every match they play and to trust the coaches and listen to their advice. The coaches have lots of faith that these younger girls will rise to the challenge.
The coaching staff and team are very fortunate this year to have a new assistant coach. Coach Gates is a former player for Mustang and went on to play for SNU. Her experience on the court will be a major asset for the girls. She has been in their position before and understands the pressure they will be put under. Coach Hurst is very excited to have this new weapon in his coaching arsenal.

BOYS AND GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD PREVIEW
Tristan Plumlee - 400 meters 49.04 seconds
Rachel Hamel - 100 meters 14.52 seconds
The coaching staff is excited about this year's Track and Field Team as almost all of the boys team returns and a good majority of the girls team is returning as well. With few seniors on the girls team, the boys seniors are doing their best to step up and provide leadership for the younger athletes. These boys have a big impact on how good the team can become and the coaches look forward to seeing them continue to grow in this role.
Last year's team was lacking in sprinters and the coaching staff is hoping to find more in that area as this will help the overall team when it comes to meets, points, and the success of the team. With 15 events to work on each and every day, this coaching staff is working hard to bring more success to the track program and hope to see more records broken soon!
