Lord of the Flies

Leadership is the key to survival

What is Lord of the Flies?

Lord of the Flies is by a Nobel Prize-winning author William Golding. It is about a group of English boys abandoned on an island who try to govern themselves with the conch which symbolizes law and order, but after the conch breaks the boys get out of hand and the aspiration of a strong, central leadership has been lost.

Main characters

Ralph- Elected the leader of the group. Tries to get the other boys to build a civilization on the island.

Piggy- Invents ways to help the other boys survive on the island.

Jack- Has a strong desire to rule the other boys. Wants all the power to himself.

Simon-Only character who has a sense in mortality even though the rest of the boys have lost it.

Important Symbols

Lord of the Flies is a unique book about the importance of leadership, civilization, and order. At the beginning of the book the boys long for the rescue and try to build a civilization on the island. As the novel progresses the sane life on the island gets deserted and before long turns to panic and loss. The boys revert to cruelty, savagery, and barbarism. This is an example of the inhumanity of what the boys turn into. Lord of the Flies is a plot twisting book that gets you hooked in the first chapter. My group agrees that it is an exceptional must read book that can be enjoyed by anyone.
