Reading Rocks
We are about halfway through our PTO Read A Thon and well on our way to earn our goal. So far, with 28% of our students participating, we have raised $18,677. For last year's Walk A Thon, we had a total of 42% of our students participate. We are adding a new incentive to this year's Read A Thon. If 50% of our students participate, the entire school will receive a dress down pass and a free snow cone during recess one day! Help your school and earn snow cones and a fun dress down day by contributing today!
Donations can be made online or in the school office. Regardless of the motive for collecting money, your child will get credit toward our prizes.
- All students who raise $50 will earn a dress down pass.
- For every $100 raised by a student, he/she will earn a chance to win some great prizes including Airpods, Hoverboard, etc.
- The top earning class will earn an ice cream party. Current standings are: 1st Place 4A; 2nd Place 6B; 3rd Place 7A.
- Select teachers will dress as rock stars for each level of money earned. So far Ms. Keown, Ms. Mukai, Ms.McGillin, Coach Edwards, Mr. Ortiz, Mrs. Freeland will dress as rock stars. Let's get some more teachers to dress as rock stars! When we reach $17,000 earned, Mrs. Magnole will dress as a rock star. Who will these teachers dress as? We cannot wait to find out!
The students will read the week of September 21-25. The deadline for the Read A Thon is Friday, September 25th. Please help us reach our goal.
#Allinthistogether
Thank you for continuing to support our protocols and taking all necessary precautions to help keep each other healthy at school. If you have any questions about the protocols, please check out the Covid-19 Reference Guide on the school website under News and Information. You are also encouraged to call Mrs. Haas or Mr. Reilly at school. Our families are doing a great job of keeping students home when they aren't feeling well or may have had possible exposure. We are most grateful!
Virtual learners
- Parents of virtual learners, please remember to stop by the school tomorrow (Friday, September 18) by 5:30pm to drop off this week's folder of completed work and pick up next week's folder of papers your child will need to be successful learning from home.
- It is critical that our virtual learners are prepared for class with all materials and completed work in their work space before the school day begins. Virtual learners are earning numeric grades, just like their classmates that are in class. Missing assignments are counted as zeroes and negatively affect the student's grade. More importantly, when a student doesn't complete an assignment, he/she doesn't show mastery of necessary standards to move forward. Communicate with your child's teacher(s) to determine the method for work being assigned and submitted, if you are unsure.
- We are monitoring a virtual student's attendance throughout the school day by a number of means, including a report that Zoom provides to us of times that your child is logged into Zoom. Beginning immediately, Mrs. Haas will be pulling Zoom reports daily and notifying parents of students who missed a part of the day. Just like if a student is signed out early from school, a child's failure to be logged into a class via Zoom will result in the child being marked absent from that class. For those students on Scholarship (Step Up, Family Empowerment, Gardiner, and McKay), full attendance daily is critical as absences may put your scholarship in jeopardy.
Mass
We will celebrate our first school mass of the year on Wednesday, September 23rd. Students in Kindergarten, Grade 3 and Grade 8 will attend mass in the church. Those students should wear mass uniforms, regardless of whether they have PE on Wednesday, since they will be going into the church. Immediately following mass, we will recognize those students in grades 3 and 8 that earned the St. Joseph Award last year (when they were in grades 2 and 7). The rest of the students will participate in the liturgy via livestream from their homeroom classes. Please remember to send in your non-perishable food item for We Feed Wednesday. Virtual students are expected to be logged in for virtual mass.
Parents and family members are invited to join us in the church for school masses this year. We ask that you please park in the school office parking lot or across the street near rooms 2 and 3. Additionally, we need those attending mass to please check in at the school office and sit in the back of the church in the section reserved for guests. Please note that daily mass will be celebrated in the chapel. Beginning this year, school mass is limited to our students and parents who have signed into the school office. Outside guests/visitors (not signed in) will not attend mass with the school but are invited to worship with the parishioners in the chapel at the same time.

Dress code
Mrs. Haas and Mrs. Magnole will be working closely with all teachers and students in the coming weeks to ensure that students are complying with the dress code. Some reminders that we see need to be addressed:
- Shoes: Predominantly white, black, grey, brown or navy shoes are to be worn with laces matching the predominant color of the shoes. The shoes may have one secondary color.
- Haircuts: Boys’ hair must be above the brow, not past the mid point of the ear, and cannot touch the shirt collar. Boys must be clean shaven. Sideburns cannot be below the mid section of the ear.
- Uniform Bottoms must be purchased from Sir Walter or the SJCS Used Uniform Store.
When reminders are given about uniform infractions, it is expected that the students (and parents) comply as quickly as possible. You may find the complete dress code in the Parent/Student Handbook on page 12 and 13. The Handbook is on the school website at stjosephwhschool.org and then click on "News and Information."
