Central Hub
September 2017
A Note from the Principal
Dear Central Families,
This year, I am trying something different with the newsletter by creating monthly Central Hub Quick Chats. Hopefully, this will save you time to hear what is going on at Central, while freeing up time to read through important dates and information contained in the rest of the newsletter.
Sincerely,
Julie Thacker

Attendance
We enjoy seeing your children every day. Although we understand that there will be times when your child is sick and needs to stay home, there is a direct correlation between student attendance and success. Here are a few ways we can work together to make sure your children have very good school attendance and don't feel like they are missing out.
- Schedule all doctor’s appointments outside of the school day if at all possible.
- It is very important to turn in medical notes (doctor, dentist, therapy, etc) to the nurse when returning to school.
- Share with your child how important it is to be at school.
- Make sure to communicate absences in advance, if possible, so the classroom teacher can ensure that your child still has opportunities to learn skills that he/she will miss when they are absent.
- Help to make sure that your child arrives at school on time each day. The doors open at 8:30 and students need to be seated in their classroom each morning by 8:50 or they are counted tardy.
Our teachers work hard to provide the best instruction and we want to make the most of each of our days together. We look forward to seeing you at school!
Changing the End of the Day Transportation Routine
The following information is simplified from our handbook:
- If your child is to go home a way different than their normal arrangement, you must send in a note to the teacher with instructions as to how the child is to go home.
- Please make these arrangements before school or by 1:00 p.m. at the latest.
- If you call requesting that your child become a car rider, you are required to come into the school office to sign out your child. Your child will be waiting in the office lobby until you sign them out.
- If you call requesting that your child ride a bus home instead of being a car rider, we will need to verify that we are speaking to the child’s parent/guardian
- Finally, please note that e-mail notifications of changes for the end of the day ride home will not be accepted.
Running Club
Do you like to run? Then you should join the Central Running Club. It is open to students in 3rd-5th grades and will meet from September 5th through October 3rd.
Where: Meet in the gym and run outside, Rain or Shine!
When: Tuesdays from 4-5pm please make sure you are here promptly at 5:00 to pick up your child. You can pick them up in the horseshoe parking lot. Please stay in your car and pull around the horseshoe and we will send them out to you. If you are late, your child may be excused from the club!
Mark your calendar--September 19, 26 and October 3rd
Why: To stay healthy, get in shape, and build stamina.
Need: Appropriate running shoes that lace up, socks, a snack, a drink, appropriate running clothes (try to avoid jeans) and a good attitude. There will be time before practice starts to eat a snack and change clothes if needed.
If you have further questions, please contact Club sponsor Mrs. Riester at kriester@plainfield.k12.in.us.

What is the Central Celebration?
"Learn Like a Champion" is our motto this school year.
Below are the details of each award:
Value of the Month Winner: Each month, the Plainfield Community School Corporation focuses on a Community Value and each teacher chooses a student in their class who represents that Value. For each value, one student is chosen as the overall winner from Central Elementary and is invited to the follow month's School Board meeting where their teacher will read the student's nomination letter and the student will be awarded with a Value of the Month Trophy. At the Central Celebration in October, we acknowledge the Value winners from each class for August, September and October.
Rising Star: Every teacher chooses a student who is their Rising Star for the quarter. This student is chosen for their positive attitude, work ethic and overall academic improvement that is displayed over the course of the three months of the quarter.
Perfect Attendance: Each student who attended school every day for the quarter will be recognized and receive a special "Perfect Attendance" brag tag for their CHAMPS necklace/key chain.
Specials Awards: The Art, Library, Music and Gym teachers choose one student from each grade who is a stand-out in their class to receive an award.

Raiden's Nomination Letter from Mrs. Maple
I am nominating Raiden Brandgard for being an outstanding example of the value of Truth and Respect for Laws and Rules for August. Raiden follows directions well and mostly the first time given. He respects our school rules and picks up in our classroom, restroom and playground. When we play outside, Raiden plays on the equipment correctly. As we walk through the halls, he doesn't make a noise. Raiden is a wonderful example of someone that shows Truth and Respect for Laws and Rules no matter where he may be.
Central C.H.A.M.P.S
Central Elementary is excited to share our Positive Behavior Intervention Support program. Our program is rooted in Central character and the idea that Champions Make Choices and Choices Make Champions. Our faculty was involved in creating and defining a Central CHAMPS student.
The following defines what it means to be a CHAMPS student:
Caring
Honest
Achievement
Making good choices
Prepared to learn
Safety
Furthermore, we have defined our Central Champs expectations in all areas throughout our school. In a continued effort to recognize our students making good choices, as well as build our climate and culture, we are going to begin our school-wide incentive program using Brag Tags. All students will receive a necklace and a Central tag to start with to be worn every Friday. This is a way to acknowledge the hard work and positive behavior of our students. Additional tags will be awarded one time a month.
CAFE NEWS:
We love to see you come eat with your children! But PLEASE remember to bring
exact cash or check with you to purchase lunch for yourself or another visitor. We only have a small amount of cash in the register and cannot make change. Lunch is $2.40.
Also, since we have no way of knowing who puts money on the account, you cannot use your child's lunch card balance towards the purchase of your own lunch.
We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your understanding.
