Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan
Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan is a story of 13 year old Esperanza who is the daughter of a wealthy landowner in Aguascalientes, Mexico. After Esperanza's father is killed by bandits, Esperanza's mom, Esperanza, and some faithful servants flee the authoritative control of Esperanza's brother in law to an impoverished life of farm picking in California. Unfortunately, they have left abuelita behind since she is hurt and unable to make the trip. Esperanza's mom falls ill and Esperanza must work harder to raise money to bring Abuelita across the border to help her. Esperanza also feels the prejudices and inequities of the farm labors during the great depression in the 1930s. Esperanza journeys from riches to rags and learns the importance of hard work and setting goals through the valleys and mountain peaks of life.
