HISTORY
The Russian state began in the region between the Baltic and Black seas.They expanded at a rate of about 55 square miles a day for the next four centuries. Russia took control of the territory by the late 18th century but did not sell to U.S. until 1867.
IMPORTANT PEOPLE
Early in the 1500s, the Russian leader Ivan the Great put an end to two centuries of foreign rule in his homeland. Russia Then entered a period of explosive growth.
Culture
The region has a rich variety of ethnic groups because of the many people absorbed during the centuries of Russian expansion.Russians have one of the biggest ethnic groups. About 80% of the total. Nearly 70 different cultures live in Russia, including Finnish, Turkic, and Mongolian.
Economy
Russia has a high-income mixed economy with state ownership in strategic areas of the economy. Market reforms in the 1990s privatized much of Russian industry and agriculture, with notable exceptions in the energy and defense-related sectors.
