Messmer Gardens

High School LEADERS tackle the great unknown!

What is a Community Garden?

A Community Garden is defined as, "any piece of land which is gardened by a group of people. ANYONE can choose to run or support a community garden whether it be a church, business, home owner, non profit, or a college. The group of people that choose to run a garden, usually unpaid individuals or volunteers (i.e. the gardeners themselves), are solely responsible to lead the project in order for the produce to thrive and thereby be dispersed into the community" (BeGreen.botw.org)

LEADERS students will soon begin construction on the MHS Garden zone! It will measure 96 feet x 32 feet! Our garden will have peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, strawberries, lettuce, cilantro, and peas! See the EVENT Details below for opportunities to help us out!

What is "LEADERS?"

The group of people who have chosen to run this garden are part of the MHS LEADERS program. LEADERS is a 21st Century Community Learning Center where students participate in homework help and enrichment activities. Yup! You guessed it - This community garden project is an ENRICHMENT activity! Basically, that means that it's an activity or opportunity that LEADERS students get to participate in that supplements the education they're getting in school. So it's extra hands-on practice to actually USE all that STUFF they're learning about in their classes. Pretty cool, huh?
