Week #26 Update
Dear OLL Families,
Who Was St. Patrick?
Saint Patrick, who lived during the fifth century, is the patron saint of Ireland and its national apostle. Born in Roman Britain, he was kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave at 16. He later escaped, but returned to Ireland and was credited with bringing Christianity to its people.
Before the end of the 7th century, Patrick had become a legendary figure, and the legends have continued to grow. One of these would have it that he drove the snakes of Ireland into the sea to their destruction. Patrick himself wrote that he raised people from the dead, and a 12th-century hagiography places this number at 33 men, some of whom are said to have been deceased for many years. He also reportedly prayed for the provision of food for hungry sailors traveling by land through a desolate area, and a herd of swine miraculously appeared.
Perhaps the most well-known legend of St. Patrick is that he explained the Holy Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) using the three leaves of a native Irish clover, the shamrock.
“May the raindrops fall lightly on your brow, may the soft winds freshen your spirit, may the sunshine brighten your heart, may the burdens of the day rest lightly upon you, and may God enfold you in the mantle of His love." ☘️

HSA Scholastic Book Fair!
Parents and Families:
Get ready! The Scholastic Book Fair is coming our way (YAY!). Choosing their own books empowers kids and inspires them to become Bolder, Prouder, and Stronger Readers. AND—as always—every book they buy earns rewards for our school.
This year, say goodbye to cash and hello to eWallet—your child’s digital payment account. Before the Fair, set up eWallet for worry-free, cash-free purchases. Anyone can contribute! Share each child’s eWallet so friends and family can add funds and give your kids more books to enjoy.
If you can’t make it to the Fair, then shop at our school’s Online Book Fair. All orders ship directly to your home, and shipping is free for book orders over $25. Your online orders will also benefit our school.

OLL 100th Anniversary! 1923 - 2023
Our beloved Parish will be 100 years old this year!
The Parish community of Our Lady of the Lake will be gathering together over the next two years to celebrate the 100 th Anniversary of our great parish.
So how did our parish get started?
In the early 1900’s, Catholic residents in Verona had to travel to Orange or Belleville to attend Mass. They dreamed of having a Catholic Church in Verona and petitioned the Bishop of Newark in 1914 to build a church in Verona, but the petition was denied! After persevering for another 9 years, the Most Reverend John O’Connor, Bishop of Newark sanctioned and approved the petition on July 14, 1923.
On September 16, 1923, the first Mass of Our Lady of the Lake was offered in Verona High School (now H.B. Whitehorne Middle School) and four months later on January 20, 1924, Reverend James Kelly (Our Lady of the Lake’s first pastor) broke ground on Lakeside Avenue.
On June 15, 1924, the first Mass was celebrated in the new church which is now the gymnasium of OLL’s school.
We have many events planned for the 100 th Anniversary to celebrate the dream those
parishioners had back in 1923 and which we continue today.
