Alder Weekly Update
May 23, 2021
Message from the Principal
Hello Students, Parents, and Staff!
I hope that this week brought some happiness and fun! It definitely did at Alder. We are working hard to close one school year, while looking ahead to the next.
Parents- Right now, we have many students who need to bring up their grades. So, please help by checking the Infinite Campus grades portal. Encourage your child to bring up low grades. Teachers are here everyday, ready and willing to help during class, small groups and virtual help. It is more important than ever to communicate with your child’s teachers and support your child toward better grades by encouraging them to get work in and complete any missing tests. Teachers will accept any late assignments withour penalty. In addition, some of you may have received a phone call from your child’s counselor, a teacher, or administrator about summer school. If you received a phone call, please send your child to this summer school program. There is an in person program in July and a virtual one in August. It is ideal for your shild to attend in person. This program is for students who did not do well virtually and/or they are at risk of failing one or more of their major subjects: English, Math, Science, or Social Studies.
As our week continued, we prepared for our National Junior Honor Society Program on Wednesday. This will take place at Fernwood Avenue Middle School, where we will recognize our high achieving students. We will honor our current 8th grade recipients from last year and our 7th graders, who are achieving this status this year. On June 1st, we will have a rehearsal at Fernwood in the morning and on Wednesday, June 2nd, in the morning, we will have our ceremony. Students are being issued one ticket for a parent to attend the event. It will be live streamed also.
We are planning 8th Grade Awards, our Renaissance People’s Choice Awards, and an 8th Grade Picnic. We want our 8th graders to have some quality time and memories to share before moving on to high school. We know there are great opportunities ahead for our soon to be 9th grade students.
Finally, this week brought our Summer String’s Ensemble Performance. Our students performed at Fernwood in their auditorium on May 27th, Thursday evening. Mrs. DiSalvia led our Alder students in a wonderful, heart-warming performance. Our Alder students shared a few numbers with Fernwood students. Then, they played a few pieces as an Alder Ensemble. It was an amazing night to showcase our students, join together at our sister school with other students, and celebrate with parents and staff these students’ accomplishments. It was amazing to see a live performance with a safe distancing in place along with extremely happy parents, students, and staff all in attendance.
Again, as the final weeks are ahead, we ask that you please remind your son or daughter about the dress code. Hoods can not be worn up over their heads. Cell phones should be put away in hallways and used as directed by teachers. Many students began a habit of using it for academics, which was quite helpful when virtual. However, now we need to be sure that students are not distracted by cell phones in the hallways. We need them to attend to their surroundings and listen to the administration’s and staff's guidance for use.
Safety measures are in place to best ensure that everyone here stays healthy. Everyone is wearing masks and maintaining distance. Masks are mandatory. However, beginning on Tuesday, June 1st, face shields are no longer needed for our middle school students.
On Memorial Day, please remember those who have served and offered the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and democracy.
Enjoy your weekend and stay safe!
