Email Address Please!
If you have not already given your teacher your email address, please send her an email with your primary email address. We communicate a lot through email so please be sure that we have an address that you check often. As soon as we have everyone’s email address, each teacher will send out volunteer schedules through Sign Up Genius.

School Arrival
Upon arriving at school in the morning, first graders will be guided to the dining hall where they will line up with their classes. The children will be supervised and then sent to their appropriate classrooms at 9:00 a.m.
Lifework
Lifework will be assigned Monday through Thursday. 10 – 20 minutes of reading is expected every day of the week. First graders will record their lifework in their daily agenda. Parents are to check agendas daily for assignments and notes. Once you are confident that your child has completed his/her assignments, please sign the agenda. All spelling and writing lifework must be completed in the Lifework Journal using neat, D’Nealian handwriting.
Phone Tree
We need five parent volunteers from each class to be a part of our class phone trees. We also need one main parent volunteer to be at the top of each phone tree. Volunteers will be responsible for calling other parents in the case of an early school closing due to inclement weather or an emergency situation. Please email us to let us know if you are willing to participate.
Birthdays
Students may bring in a treat for the class on their birthdays. Please send in peanut free treats. The treat must be prepared in individual servings such as cupcakes, doughnuts, or cookies. We will enjoy the treat during lunch. (Each class has 26 students.)
Physical Education Days
On P.E. days the children should wear sneakers to school. There is not enough time for children to change shoes before and after P.E. Also, if girls wear a skirt or jumper that day, they should wear shorts under it. P.E. is held on the following days:
Mrs. Brandt’s class Day 1 and 4
Mrs. Moore’s class Day 2 and 5
Mrs. Buck’s class Day 3 and 6
D'Nealian Handwriting
Students at Pennington are expected to use D'Nealian handwriting on all assignments. First graders learned how to write a D'Nealian "A" last week. They will learn how to write a D'Nealian "B" this week. Next week they will learn the letter "C"...and so on. Please encourage your child to start using D'Nealian handwriting on their lifework at home. The primary lined notebooks will help the students form their letters correctly and guide their writing. For more information on D'Nealian Manuscript go to the link below.
September Poems
A Wise Old Owl
A wise old owl
lived in an oak;
The more he saw
the less he spoke;
The less he spoke
the more he heard
Why can't we all
be like that bird?

Always Finish
If a task is once begun,
Never leave it till it’s done.
Be the labor great or small,
Do it well or not at all.
