Newsletter Term 2 Week 10
West Park School - 9th July 2020
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia ora, Talofa, Kia orana, Greetings Parents, Grandparents and Caregivers,
A huge thanks to all the people who have throughout the term supported the school by supervising road crossings, returning books, reading with kids in classrooms, accompanying classes on field trips, and by supporting kids during various sporting events. Staff and students really appreciate your support and presence. A special thanks to staff and parents involved in organizing and delivering last evening’s Matariki evening, which was well attended and enjoyed by all.
A final farewell to Barry Clarke as he changes careers to become a builder; Donna Curran-Green who will be moving north to build her dream home; Maree MacIver who will be taking over a maternity leave position for Term 3; and to Howard Young who leaves up to become principal at Evans Bay Intermediate School. We wish them all the very best in their next life chapters.
We also welcome Callan NcNamee and Jim McDonald as the new Rooms 12 and 13 Teachers. Both are really excited to be starting together and joining Team Kahikatea.
I hope you all have a lovely and safe school break.

Cross Country
An extremely successful Cross Country Carnival was held this term with students being placed in house teams for the first time. It was fantastic to see the students cheering each other on, particularly when the whole school gathered in their new teams to cheer on the Yr 1 and 2 runners during their races. Well done to Team Kakariki who were the inaugural house cross country winners.
On the track all the students put their best efforts into their running and even though it can be a tough event there were lots of proud smiles as students crossed the finish line.
We were pleased to send 30 Year 1-3 students to the Amesbury Invitational Cross Country where these students proudly represented our school, running against students from other local schools.
We also sent 30 years 4-6 students to the Northern Zone Cross country Races where all our runners put up excellent performances. Following on from this event Grace, Jessica, Lucy (Yr5), and Sam (Yr6) went on to represent The Northern Zone at the Inter Zone Carnival.
After a coming 6th at the Interzone Carnival Jessica then went on to race at the Region carnival coming a brilliant 20th. This is a fantastic achievement against a field for extremely strong runners. Well done Jessica.

Miniball
Two enthusiastic teams, a Yr3/4 team and a Yr 5/6 participated in the miniball competition at Nairnville Rec Centre in Term 2. The students were always competitive and enjoyed every game, showing effort and sportsmanship at all times. Thank you to Adele and Cathy for coaching the miniball teams this term.
Entries for Term 3 have been finalised, but there will be another competition in Term 4 for students who may like to try miniball.
Netball
The Yr 5/6 Saturday netball season is in full swing and will continue next term. After a delay we are looking forward to Yr 3/4 netball starting in Term 3 as well as the Yr 1/2 Future Ferns program.
Hockey
A team of seven Yr 5/6 students attended the Northern Zone Hockey day at the National Hockey Centre at Newtown this term. It was a big day with 6 games altogether with 5 of them in a row leaving some very tired players by yrh end of the day. The students were all at different levels and the team work and support of each other was the highlight of the day. A couple of wins, a few losses and lots of goals made for an enjoyable day.
Thank you to all the parents who have helped with coaching, transporting and cheering the students along at sports events so far this year and we look forward to offering the students other opportunities in a variety of Sports during the second half of the year.

If you are able to help we would very much appreciate it. Please email Jade Poulter on jadep@westpark.school.nz
