WLWV School Board Briefs
November 2, 2021
The West Linn-Wilsonville School Board held a public meeting on Monday, Nov. 1. The following are important news and notes from that meeting.

No School on Friday, November 12
The West Linn-Wilsonville School Board voted to make November 12th a non-instructional day for staff and no school for students during the Nov. 1 meeting.
The Board made this change based on a number of factors:
Since school started in September, there has been a labor shortage that has impacted WLWV like every school district all across Oregon. There are teaching and staff positions we have still not been able to fill. A severe shortage in the pool of substitutes has meant that each day our teachers are giving up their planning time to fill in for colleagues; specialists, counselors and principals are spending time in classrooms as teachers; custodial staff are working overtime to fill in for one another and make sure school activities are still covered during the evenings and weekends. Staff is overextended and could benefit from some relief.
Friday, November 12 provides an additional challenge this year. With the mid-week holiday, Veterans Day, observed on Thursday November 11 so close to the weekend, the district has learned that the already-shortened supply of substitutes will just not be available to safely staff classrooms.
Therefore, the Board determined that November 12 was an optimal day for a non-instructional, Wellness Day for all staff.
The Board and district leaders understand that this decision may present a challenge for some families regarding childcare and considering the timing of the change.
The district will not make up this school day later in the year; this decision will mean that there is one less instructional day in the school calendar. The district still meets the state requirement for instructional hours.
Board Approves Land Purchase
The district will use approximately an acre of the property to expand parking at the Administration Building. The remaining portion of the property will be kept as part of the district's land bank.
School Board Plans Listening Session for November 17
The first session will be virtual with the purpose of hearing from parents, students, and community members through two-way communication. The School Board will not take action at listening sessions, but will instead use meetings as opportunities to connect with stakeholders and engage in dialogue.
The topic for the Nov. 17 Listening Session will be "The role and purpose of school boards." More information about these public Board Listening Sessions, including a meeting link for the first event, will be shared later this week.
District to Host Vaccination Clinic on November 13 at Meridian Creek Middle School
The clinic is for any student or community member getting their first COVID-19 vaccination. Vaccinations will be available for ages 12 and up and could be available for ages 5-11 depending on whether or not it has been approved for younger children by that time. There will not be boosters available at these clinics.
The district will provide more information, including how to make an appointment, in the coming days.
School Board Opens Two Positions for Budget Committee
Budget Committee terms are three years in length. To apply, community members are asked to fill out an application found on the Business Office webpage. Applications will be posted later in the week.
The Board also received the proposed budget calendar during the Nov. 1 meeting.
