Principal's Message
Hello Patriots,
As we approach Valentine's Day this Monday, I recall a 80's song called "I want to know what love is?" by Foreigner. Yeah, I am that old. I guess it depends on the circumstance and one's point of view. There seems to be more bountiful expressions of hate or evil in society today. People's differences and lack of love will at times drive destructive behavior towards others. Kindness, patience, empathy and compassion are clear manifestations of love that tend to build a trusting and caring school community.
In my research, I found a statement from a very old book, The Old Testament, that can help our school community find the best way to build this "love.":
"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."
Today, it is too easy for some students to "dishonor others" through the use of social media. These actions drives students away from each other and makes it more difficult to achieve strong sense of community. Be careful what you write about others, it is always better to find common ground than to bring down others. Who knows, if given a chance, you might find that you have more in common with this person than you think.

Hearts for Henry
The Student Council is also selling Treat Grams, with some of the proceeds going to "For Henry". Students can buy a treat gram for their someone special at all lunches. Today is the last day; they will be delivered on Monday. Teachers: they do make great V-day gifts to your advisory students. (If you would like to purchase some, please let me know. They are $2 per bag.)
Thank you.

Plant a Tree
The PHS Green Club, in collaboration with Tree-Plenish, are looking to plant enough trees in April to offset the paper used in a year at Portsmouth High School. Last year we planted 275 saplings with a goal this year of 300. Access our website here to choose and order your saplings. The first 200 are free!! Donations to TreePlenish (or the Green Club) are appreciated! Deadline to purchase is March 5th.
Trees you purchase can be picked up or planted by volunteers on April 9th. Eventually we will be in need of volunteers so be sure to check back on the site to sign up to help plant.

Quarantined Students
Students who need to quarantine will be provided with asynchronous distance learning. All teachers are prepared to have daily assignments and accompanying materials available for students on a regular basis.
It is important that your child check in with Google Classroom and access the necessary lessons. This will make for an easy transition when your child is matriculating back at school. If you have a hardship, please contact your child's school counselor.
