EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP SCHOOL DISTRICT

Central Office Communications: Week of January 9, 2022

SUPERINTENDENTS UPDATE

Egg Harbor Township School Community,

The snow really made a showing this week as it blanketed Egg Harbor Township with substantial accumulations that created three days of school closure. These days will be added to the end of the school year. Unfortunately, the NJDOE has not approved a ‘snow day’ for virtual learning, therefore one day will be added to the school calendar at this time.

The determination of school closure for snow begins with me when I spend time closely monitoring the weather forecast, reaching out to local meteorologists, having discussions with fellow county superintendents, the Egg Harbor Township Chief of Police and Public Works, and our district transportation, facilities, and food services departments about the timing of the storm, staffing in place to assist with sidewalk clearing and salting, plowing and salting lots and district roadways, managing food orders, and heating the buildings. I am in communication with all entities to see if it is possible to have schools open safely for students. This includes the conditions of bus stops and weather temperatures that are factors for our students waiting for buses in the early morning. If possible, I will send a call out the night before the closure to provide parents enough time to secure child care and/or make arrangements with their workplace. There will be times where school closure will be determined in the early morning due to the timing of the storm and an uncertain forecast. With the two storms this past week, I was pretty confident with the information that I gathered, to make the call the evening before.

As for the COVID-19 virus, we are experiencing a high rise of cases since winter break. Perhaps the snow did us a favor because the virus has affected both staff and students. We are closely monitoring our reported cases, communicating with the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH), the Atlantic County Division of Public Health (ACDPH) and the NJDOE via the county superintendent. At this time, we plan for our schools to be open to serve our students academically, socially, and emotionally. We will assess the impact of our cases on a case by case, classroom by classroom, school by school, department by department basis and do our very best to keep schools safely open.

Communication from me to parents will be by a phone call, messages in the parent portal, and via text messages and emails. Please know that I am not using social media for communication. Only rely upon direct information from me, in updates like this for accurate information. Although social media is a popular communication tool, public comments are not always accurate and do not always reflect the school district's current status or the decisions that are made based upon factual information and direction from the county and state levels.

Please be assured that we will closely monitor COVID -19 cases and the updates from the NJDOH and the ACDPH, as well any inclement weather. We are committed to our school district mission to EMBRACE, ENGAGE, and EDUCATE the students of the Egg Harbor Township School District.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

It is our collective responsibility to ensure that our students have the resources and support to achieve success both inside and outside of our classrooms. We are committed to providing Literacy for ALL where formative assessments will occur daily in our classrooms. Data will be collected and analyzed by teachers and also in Professional Learning Communities where teachers meet to discuss and develop collaborative strategies to assist with student achievement. We are prepared to dig deeper by examining hard data and address student learning needs in order for students to remain on/progress to grade level and not fall behind. Response to Intervention is in place with the use of Multi-Tiered Systems of support and Interventionists in all of our schools. We will continue providing students with innovative opportunities in the area of STREAM education; including the advancement of Aviation. With all said thus far, none of this can occur without a strong focus on Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). We, students included, have all experienced some sort of trauma or frustrations throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and together we must heal together. SEL has to be part of the fabric of our goal to improve student learning. As we return to in person learning for all, we as a school district are dedicated to building relationships with students and their families, to take the time to listen to students and recognize their needs and concerns, to work to identify potential barriers for growth, to provide resources to assist students academically, socially and emotionally, and to create a school culture that is inclusive and welcoming; A place where every child wants to be each and every day.

CLIMATE, CULTURE and #EHTPride

CLIMATE, CULTURE & #EHTPride

We are dedicated to learning together, growing together, and healing together within a positive school climate. Celebrations of recognition and reward for achievement, even the littlest steps, will occur in all of our schools as we value the importance of appreciation and respect. We have a lot of #EHTPride in taking care of our students and showcasing their achievements.

We are committed to setting a foundation of culture in our school that includes respect for diversity, inclusion and equity for ALL students and staff. To empower our school community to be positive, supportive, patient, and understanding. To unify all members around one central goal that includes nurturing a strong culture that allows students, teachers, staff, and community members to flourish as individuals and as a community.

With Every Hand Together, Every child, Everyday is provided a relevant learning experience. Our teachers collaborate in professional learning communities to review student progress in order to provide ALL students with the opportunity to learn at high levels. We know that in order to successfully educate each student, we must be cognizant of each student’s individual learning needs. This can only be accomplished if we work together to eliminate any predictability of achievement disparities by race, ethnicity, gender, language, disability, and/or economics. All faculty and staff participated in equity training during our professional learning days. Together, we can achieve more!
