Ms. Ingle's Messages
week of September 7
Muddy Sneakers
Fifth grade is in planning stages with our Muddy Sneakers representative. Muddy Sneakers is a program that provides science-based field trips designed to enrich work done in the classroom. We would like our first expedition to take place toward the end of September. This week, your child will bring a Muddy Sneakers release form home with their homework packet. It is very important that this release is sent back right away. We will need if before our first trip!
Literacy
We are now working through 2 of our daily 5 rounds! Great work team! We have surpassed our stamina goal during 'Read to Self' and are still building toward 20 minutes during 'Work on Writing'.
This week, during 'Work on Writing', students are allowed to work on 'free-writing' on any subject they choose. They will also continue work on the writing process. Students are learning to use specific graphic organizers and are working through the following steps to create completed writing samples:
- Prewrite
- Draft
- Revise
- Edit
- Publish
As students become more comfortable with this process, we will move into more detailed evidence-based writing.
7 Habits
So far this year, we have been focused on the first habit of a highly effective person...BE PROACTIVE. Students have had time to learn about taking positive steps to control their reactions to the things that happen in life. This week, we will be focusing on the second habit...BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND. Students will create a personal mission statement. They will then set goals that support this statement. Please take time to chat with your child about goals they may want to set for themselves.
Math
This week we will continue our work on comparing and ordering decimals. As students become more confident in this area, we will move on to adding and subtracting decimals. Be sure to complete this week's homework packet that goes along with this important classroom math work.
Science
During science for the next few weeks, we will be focused on weather. Students are learning to track certain weather data over time so that they will be able to predict weather based on patterns. We will review the water cycle and it's role in the creation of clouds. We will also be taking a detailed look at specific types of clouds. Students will work through investigations to determine what environmental changes affect the creation of various storm fronts and other weather systems.
