Garretson Blue Dragon Tales
Superintendent News by Mr. Guy Johnson
Several months ago, business manager Jacob Schweitzer saw an opportunity to apply for a grant from the federal government to purchase up to three electric school busses and the installation of three charging stations. We were awarded the grant, with a cash value of $1,200,000.00. We are the only district in the state to be awarded the cash to purchase three busses and charging stations. The charging stations are fully installed and ready for use. On Friday, September 29th, three new electric busses were delivered to the Garretson School District. This will usher in a new chapter for our transportation department. We are proud to be one of the first to take the leap into the world of electric vehicles.
Drivers will be trained in all aspects of using the electric busses, including how to maximize battery life to get the most miles out of each charge. Mr. Nelson will be trained with respect to maintenance issues related to the busses and the company will also spend some time with the Garretson Volunteer Fire Department to ensure that this group of people know any risks should one of the busses be involved in an accident or emergency situation.
We know that we will learn much throughout the school year with respect to the use of electric vehicles vs. the older diesel technology. We anticipate that there will be significant cost savings to the district, not only in fuel, but also in time and materials necessary for the maintenance of the vehicles. We plan to track our costs with respect to the electric vehicles compared to the propane busses that were purchased a few years ago and the older diesel busses to determine the extent of the savings for the district. As with any new technology, we expect that there will be some challenges, but we look forward to working through those challenges and learning from them. It’s an exciting time to be a blue dragon!
News from the MS/HS Principal, Mr. Chris McGregor
Welcome back to school Blue Dragons!
As we usher in the crisp, autumnal days of September, I am happy to share some exciting news happening at GHS. Homecoming week was a success, showcasing the unity and spirit of our students through activities like Coronation, Powder Puff Football, Ruff and Tuff Volleyball, Dragon Olympics, the Homecoming Parade, and the community pep rally that filled our gymnasium with cheers. I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all the students, staff, parents, and community members who contributed to making this year's homecoming week a success. Special thanks to Garretson Food Center and Coca-Cola for sponsoring the hot dog feed after Coronation!
In addition to our homecoming festivities, I am delighted to announce that we are welcoming several new teachers to our district this year. These dedicated educators bring fresh perspectives and expertise to our classrooms, enriching the educational experience for our students. I would like to introduce and welcome Mr. Travis Ehrisman (HS Science), Mr. Reece Moehlenbrink (HS Social Studies), Ms. Tracy Stallman (MS Science), and Mrs. Taylor Schweitzer (Vocal Music) to the already great teaching staff at GHS and GMS. We are excited about the talents they bring and the positive impact they will undoubtedly have on our students' growth and learning.
Finally, I would like to extend heartfelt congratulations to our Agriculture teacher, Ms. Alysha Kientopf, on being named as the Region III Outstanding Early Career Teacher by the National Association of Agricultural Educators. This recognition is a testament to her dedication and outstanding contributions to our school and the field of agriculture education. We are immensely proud of this achievement and grateful for Ms. Kientopf’s commitment to providing our students with an exceptional learning experience.
Thank you for your continued support, and I look forward to all the wonderful moments this new school year will bring as we continue to learn and grow together.
Little Dragon Corner by Mrs. Katie Hoekman, Elem. Principal
We are off to a great start in the elementary this year! Students had a great week of dress-up days, dragon olympics, pep rallies, and parade for homecoming! (See pictures below of Dragon Olympics)
We have welcomed a few new faces to the elementary this year again! Miss Tori Hansen joins us in third grade, Mrs. Denae Bass in second grade, and Mrs. Taylor Schweitzer as our K-12 Music teacher. We have also welcomed Donna Cutrer as an Educational Assistant in our Elementary.
Students were challenged to read 500 pages this summer; K-1 individually or as a family, 2-5 by themselves. These students completed the challenge and returned their paperwork to Mrs. Mac. They received a $10 gift card to Barnes and Noble. Students received their gift cards on September 21 from Mrs. Mac and took their picture! Great job, Blue Dragon Readers!

Conferences will be held on two days this year: October 18 from 2:00 PM-6:00 PM AND October 25 from 4:00 PM-6:00 PM. Each teacher will have their own online sign up where you will be able to select from available times for each of your students' teachers again this year. I will be sharing these links with you through ThrillShare at the beginning of October so please be watching for it and in your child’s teacher's newsletters. I hope that all of you will be able to visit with your child’s teacher to discuss their progress and goals for this year!
Finally, I want to make parents aware that K-2 students will be performing at the Winter Concert this year and 3-5 students will be performing at the Spring Concert this year. In the past this has been opposite, so as families begin planning for those holiday concerts please be aware the grade levels have switched the time of year they will be performing.
I look forward to continuing to growing and working together in your child’s educational career!
