NASA STEM Challenge coming to Afterschool!
Interested students can soon sign up for Spooner Middle Afterschool Program's 21st CCLC/NASA Engineering Design Challenge (EDC). We will join other state CLC sites and partner with NASA to engage participants in authentic, hands-on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programming.
Students from 21st CCLC sites across Wisconsin are participating in the EDC and will develop solutions to real-world challenges that NASA scientists and engineers face. Students will perform experiential and inquiry-based learning activities, practice skills and conduct scientific investigations of their simulated environments. All students will have opportunities to interact with NASA scientists and engineers to discuss their EDC specifically in the following activities:
2016 Engineering Design Challenges
• Design a Crew Exploration Vehicle — Students design and build a CEV model to safely transport two astronauts to the Moon, Mars and beyond.
• Pack for the Moon — Help design a plant growth system to be transported and used to grow food for astronauts on long-duration missions.
• Parachute onto Mars — Help design a device that slows the descent of a spacecraft or probe while protecting its cargo for a successful landing.
More information about this exciting opportunity will be forthcoming. Limited spots will be available.
