Francis Parker School 23 - January 2019
Happy New Year!
We are excited to kick off the new year focused on doing things even better than before. Our students will be engaging in new learning with their next Project Based Learning Unit which kicked off in every grade level this month (Kindergarten in February). We are close to the mid-way point of the school year and this is a perfect time to reflect and springboard to new heights for the remainder of the school year. We look forward to connecting with our parents and community members as we work together to improve what we do.
We Remain A School In Good Standing!
Expanded Learning Time at Francis Parker
What is Expanded Learning Time (ELT)?
Francis Parker School 23 has evolved over the past several years. Our School is an Expanded Learning Time School which means we have a longer school day than a traditional school. Our length of day is seven and half hours long. With this additional time we provide our students with enrichment opportunities during our Elective Block and acceleration/intervention opportunities during our WIN Block. In addition to this this student focused time, we provide our teachers with collaboration time called Academic Meetings; which allows them time to be learners and improve their practices. How is ELT Funded?
Our additional time is funded through both district funds and a NYS ELT Grant.
What is funded with ELT funds?
We budget to fund teachers and support staff additional pay to work the additional time during the day, materials and resources to support our electives, acceleration and interventions staffing to provide intervention support to students and coaching to teachers, and partnerships with The Warrior Factory and The Center For Youth.
Why do we have an expanded school day?
Francis Parker is a School in Good Standing and because of this an expanded school day is optional for us. We implement an expanded school day to provide our students with additional opportunities and supports to improve their grow both academically and social-emotionally.

Read-A-Thon
We’re excited to announce that Francis Parker will be holding a read-a-thon this February 4th – 15th! Our read-a-thon is designed to encourage all #23 students to develop excellent reading habits. Reading fosters brain development, improved concentration, improved communication skills, develops empathy, promotes creativity, promotes self-confidence, and is fun for their imaginations! Also, children who read often and widely get better at it! While your children are reading, they will also be raising funds for class field trips, supplies, and much more to support their learning at school #23. And…winning rewards for their successes! Please look for more information in student folders one week prior to the read-a-thon. Help us foster the love to read in your #23 students.
