COMPUTER SCIENCE EDUCATION WEEK
The November 23, 2021 Weekly Message from Illinois Superintendent of Education Dr. Carmen Ayala highlights Computer Science Education.
Jobs related to computer science and the tech workforce are among the fastest growing and highest paying in the nation. Computer Science Education Week is coming up Dec. 6-12 and gives us the opportunity to celebrate the tremendous strides Illinois has taken to ensure all students have access to computer science, as well as to focus on the areas where we still need to grow.
To prepare for computer science careers, students need access to computers. Illinois has invested $130 million from federal pandemic relief funding in devices and connectivity to bring Illinois just paces away from being a completely one-to-one technology environment.
Students need access to computer science education. This past spring, Illinois lawmakers enacted groundbreaking legislation that requires schools to embed computer literacy into the high school curriculum beginning in 2022-23 and to provide all high school students the opportunity to take at least one computer science course beginning in 2023-24. ISBE convened a stakeholder group to develop rigorous computer science learning standards, which Illinois adopted last month.
All students - especially those in groups who are underrepresented in STEM careers – should be encouraged to envision themselves succeeding in these fields. During Computer Science Education Week students will be introduced to a variety of computer science careers and participate in various activities.
CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
New classroom furniture, such as student desks, chairs, teachers’ desk, chairs and workstations will be arriving on November 23rd to begin installing furniture in classrooms. They will work through the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend. We are still waiting on supplies and materials in order to complete construction projects. As of November 16, 2021, 54% of the construction work is complete. Many projects are still not complete due to delays with materials. Students have access to washrooms with the exception of two washrooms on the first floor and two washrooms in the 7th grade wing. Installation of student lockers in the 1950s building are now scheduled to begin during Winter Break.
