Governor Whitmer has proclaimed February Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month in Michigan. Here are some highlights from her press release:

• CTE programs, like the ones offered at ST. Clair TEC, prepare students for career opportunities, “giving students a head start on their pathway to a certificate in professional trades, registered apprenticeships or a college degree.” Most high school programs also offer early college credit opportunities to provide a seamless transition to postsecondary education (learn more below).

• Despite the challenges presented by the global pandemic, over 97,000 Michigan high school students participated in CTE in the 2019-2020 school year. More than 95% of students who concentrated in CTE go on to attend a postsecondary educational institution, seek advanced career and technical education training, sign up for military service, participate in national volunteer service, or find employment within a year of graduation, according to MDE.

• Michigan Department of Education (MDE) data also shows students who completed a high school CTE program and went on to earn a two-year degree earn an average starting wage that is $5,200 more than their peers with no high school CTE.

• Postsecondary institutions in Michigan have more than 3,600 qualifying CTE programs, offering a certificate or associates degree. There are nearly 90,000 students enrolled in these programs in the state.

2021 SCCASB Scholarship Available

"To encourage students to choose a career track that recognizes the economic needs of the communities including the trade careers."

The SCCASB will award three (3) $1,000 scholarships to three seniors attending one of our local district high schools. The scholarship award is a competitive process. Each application received will be evaluated by a committee of school board members from across the county. Applicants will be evaluated together as a group. Points may be awarded for grade point average, leadership, financial need, evidence of self-help, community service, etc. All senior students are eligible to apply. The SCCASB has eliminated the criteria that the student must choose teaching or some other education-related profession to be considered a candidate. Students who are planning to attend a community college or trade school for any profession are eligible. Students who are planning to attend a 4-year university or college are also eligible, regardless of their career track.

2021 APPLICATION

Now is the time to learn if the middle college is right for you. The BWMCA provides an opportunity for students to begin taking college courses at SC4 in 11th grade and continue through grade 13. BWMCA students can earn an SC4 associate degree and 60 or more transferable credits at no cost.

Applications must be submitted no later than March 31, 2021. (Yale students must submit apps by February 16, 2021). Virtual information sessions are planned for all of our partner schools. Look for announcements from your school or on the BWMCA website.
