February is Career and Technical Education Month in Michigan
Students encouraged to explore education and career pathways during Career and Technical Education Month
Governor Whitmer has proclaimed February Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month in Michigan. Here are some highlights from her press release:
CTE programs, like the ones offered at ST. Clair TEC, prepare students for career opportunities, “giving students a head start on their pathway to a certificate in professional trades, registered apprenticeships or a college degree.” Most high school programs also offer early college credit opportunities to provide a seamless transition to postsecondary education (learn more below).
Despite the challenges presented by the global pandemic, over 97,000 Michigan high school students participated in CTE in the 2019-2020 school year. More than 95% of students who concentrated in CTE go on to attend a postsecondary educational institution, seek advanced career and technical education training, sign up for military service, participate in national volunteer service, or find employment within a year of graduation, according to MDE.
Michigan Department of Education (MDE) data also shows students who completed a high school CTE program and went on to earn a two-year degree earn an average starting wage that is $5,200 more than their peers with no high school CTE.
Postsecondary institutions in Michigan have more than 3,600 qualifying CTE programs, offering a certificate or associates degree. There are nearly 90,000 students enrolled in these programs in the state.
To explore professional trades careers, including Day-In-The-Life videos from real Michiganders highlighting their careers, and learn more about Career and Technical Education Month, visit Going-PRO.com/CTE.

Earn College Credit at the Career and Technical Middle College
The Career & Technical Middle College at St. Clair TEC allows students to pursue career-oriented studies in both the high school and college settings while earning college credit at no cost. CTMC students can earn an associate degree through an additional year of study.
Students in the CTMC remain students of their home high school. CTMC students take high school classes at their high school, as well as taking technical classes at TEC and college classes at St. Clair County Community College.
Students participating in the Career and Technical Middle College will, in year 11 of high school, take classes at their high school and at TEC. In year 12, they will take their classes at TEC and SC4. In year 13, virtually all their classes will be at SC4. At the end of that 13th year, students can earn an associate degree or certificate program from the college.
The CTMC is available to students in the following programs:
- Computer Programming
- Cybersecurity
- Digital Media Technology
- Engineering & Robotics
- Health

High School Seniors Eligible for $1,000 Scholarship
2021 SCCASB Scholarship Available
"To encourage students to choose a career track that recognizes the economic needs of the communities including the trade careers."
The SCCASB will award three (3) $1,000 scholarships to three seniors attending one of our local district high schools. The scholarship award is a competitive process. Spread the news about tuition-free degrees!
You know that family member or friend who’s always wanted to go to college – or return to finish a degree? Now may be the right time for them to make that dream become a reality.
If that person is 25 years or older, has a high school degree, and lives in Michigan, then a tuition-free pathway to college may be available through a new program called Michigan Reconnect. It’s a scholarship designed specifically for eligible adults who want to pursue an associate degree or skills certificate.
Michigan Reconnect pays the remaining balance of in-district tuition and mandatory fees after other state and federal financial aid have been applied. Students who attend out-of-district community colleges will receive a large tuition discount.
So, let’s all spread the word! Tell your mom, brother, grandchild, girlfriend or your best friend who’s been thinking about taking the big step of starting or finishing college about this new opportunity. It just might be the right time for them to take the leap. The Michigan Reconnect application and additional program information are available now at Michigan.gov/Reconnect, with enrollment in classes available beginning May 2021.
