Here's what's up, Woodchucks!
An update from Gladys Wood PTO
Most Successful Read-A-Thon Ever!
Thank you for supporting this important school fundraiser. Whether it was making a financial donation, encouraging your child to collect pledges, or both - it made a positive difference. We're proud to report this event collected more than $18,000 for our school! The Read-A-Thon fundraiser provides money for field trip buses, teacher classroom funds, PE supplies, library books/supplies, Spring Carnival, Battle of the Books, student awards, family events/movie nights, ice rink maintenance, Woodchuck Digs and more.
Ms. Hanks and Mrs. Levasseaur's classes won the fundraising contest and will enjoy a movie party soon, complete with popcorn, snacks and the Lion King.

B-I-N-G-O!!
Turkey Bingo is a fan favorite event. Be sure to mark your calendar for Friday, November 22. All families and friends are welcome. Bingo cards are $0.50 each or a family pack of 10 cards is $5. We'll play a series of bingos for a chance to win Thanksgiving prizes, holiday food staples and lots of turkeys!
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and bingo starts at 6:15 p.m. The 6th graders will be selling food at the event to raise funds for their end-of-year activities. Cash, check and credit card are accepted.
If you are available to volunteer for a short shift at the event, please sign up here. We purposefully made the shifts short so that volunteers could also enjoy the event with their families.
Everybody Wins at Game Night
Our first-ever Family Game Night was a great success. We counted more than 240 participants.
Thank you to our teacher and parent volunteers who came together to provide this free school event for Gladys Wood families.
We can't do it without you!
- Tastee Freez donated ice cream and soda for our $30+ pledge earners. (Parents also appreciated not having to scoop 160 individual ice cream cups!)
- H2Oasis donated 4 adult and 6 youth passes for our top pledge earners.
- Troll Hole Treats donated dozens of cookies for our 6th graders to sell during Family Game Night and sandwich cookies for the Read-A-Thon $150 jungle party.
- Parents who gave their time to chaperone the Great Pool Escape, help with the ice cream social and donated food for the teacher luncheons during conferences week.
PTO Meeting Update
- It's dark in the mornings and the intersection at 69th and Cranberry has a lot of vehicle traffic and student walkers. Drivers and children who walk to school need to be extra careful in this area. Principal Straw is gathering donations of reflective material to help keep student walkers visible in the mornings.
- Principal Straw was able to work with ASD Transportation to update the bus schedules. The buses will arrive at 8:45 a.m. to allow students to grab breakfast and head to class before the bell rings.
- A contract is established with a company to maintain the school's ice rink this winter. Now we only need consistently freezing weather!
- The school will host a family event in December. The 6th graders hope to use this event as one of their main fundraisers. Event details are still being finalized.
- The January family night is tentatively scheduled as an art show. Families can some see the 1% for Art installed in our school and see student artwork that fits the hall themes of Spring, Winter and Fall.
- Second-graders love the Math Whizz accounts that were purchased by PTO. The district pays for the online math program for students in grades 3-6. Gladys Wood teachers says they're already seeing a positive difference in math scores.
- Teachers are thankful of the PTO and parent volunteers who donated food items for the recent staff luncheons held during parent-teacher conferences.
The next general PTO meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 4. We value participants' time and will limit the meeting to 1 hour or less. Childcare is provided.
