Letter from the board

You know that old saying about assumptions? By definition, assumption is a thing that is accepted as true, or as certain to happen without proof. We make assumptions about other people’s lives based on our own experiences in life, and we assume that we are correct because we know our own experiences to be true.

I visit with folks everyday that have made assumptions about my small business and others in the Chisago Lakes Area. A few months ago, I thwarted many assumptions that the Lindstrom Bakery was closed since it had a for sale sign on the building. Daily we have visitors that enter our Glädje Gallery expecting it to be a small house and are wowed as the building opens up into nearly 6,000 square feet.

There is one big assumption that our customers are making this year that isn’t even their fault. News outlets continue to push the story about supply shortages and all those cargo ships stuck in the water off the west coast. They encourage shoppers to buy early - and online - from big box stores, neglecting to mention the small, local businesses that already have all their inventory for the holiday season. I feel they should be sharing the positives of shopping local during these times of low inventory at larger retailers, instead of scaring away our customers.

Of course I too have assumptions of my own. I have personally worked to change my negative assumptions into positives by taking initiative to learn about our area; the needs of our community, the businesses offering goods and services that differ from my own, and what I might be able to do to positively affect those that enter my own small business. Our Chisago Lakes Area has so much to offer!

The holidays are upon us and many of us are preparing our Christmas displays and events, and showing support within our community. Next weekend there are many kick-off events for the holiday season, from shopping to volunteering to entertainment. The annual Arts and Crafts show will be held at the Community Center at the High School with makers, crafters and home businesses selling their wares. My gallery, Glädje (formerly known as Gustaf’s Up North Gallery), will host our third Scandinavian Holiday Market with Santa, a visit from the creators of The Wish Books series, plus art demos, face painting and music. The Folsom House is looking for volunteers to decorate their rooms for the fast approaching annual lighting festival. Many businesses, such as Wild Mountain, are hiring for the season. Outdoor venues are gearing up for indoor events and changing hours, such as Winehaven and Pleasant Valley Orchard.

This month, I ask you to explore our community; shop local, support local, and share local! Get to know your local businesses and the needs of our neighbors. Nourish your creativity, take initiative and ask questions. Stop in for a visit, I would enjoy a conversation about what you have learned about our area - assuming you read this letter. ;)

Trick or Treat on Main Street

WOW!! I went into this event thinking that it was going to be a great year. The weather was beautiful, the event was held on Halloween weekend this year... I knew it was going to be good. I planned ahead for 500 kids. I thought, that's 150 more than we've ever had before, that should be good. Little did I know... We welcomed 1300 people to the chamber office this year!

Thank you so much to all the participating businesses. Thank you also to Girl Scout Troops 57664 & 57663 for your help in setting up this event. Thank you to the National Honor Society students who helped me set up and hand out treats throughout the event. Thank you to The Chisago Lakes Rotary & Chisago Lakes Lions for your partnership and coffee, and thank you to the Fantasy of the Lakes Festival for participating in the park. It was a wonderful event (even though some kids ended up with triathlon t-shirts instead of candy). I'm looking forward to next year and already have some ideas brewing!!

Family Pathways

Family Pathways exists to help people - it’s what we do. We specialize in being there to help people experiencing personal challenges, surviving recessions, through pandemics and everyday crises alike. But this work doesn't happen without YOU. You are part of the backbone of this community, and we’re asking you to partner with us to support our neighbors in need.

Often at this time of year - businesses, churches, and civic organizations – increase their charitable giving. Food Drives are often a part of these efforts. Here are some ways your organization can get involved:

  • Host a Virtual Food Drive

  • Host a traditional Food & Fund Drive
  • Volunteer for a Small Group Project
  • Get the Word Out that Help is Available

Learn more about how to help here.

North Woods & Waters

The North Woods and Waters of the St. Croix Heritage area have created an opportunity for folks to register and then share their special story/gifts with others about the St. Croix valley. Please share this opportunity with other folks who have a story/program/writings/music/visual arts etc. as a program. This is a great way to tell the story, and all it's riches, with others in the valley.

Here is the link straight to the storytellers page. To become a storyteller all you have to do is fill out a short form and then we'll add you to a list of storytellers.

Chisago Lake Lutheran Church

20th Annual Christmas Bazaar, Raffle, and Bethlehem Bakery - A Festive Tradition at Chisago Lake Lutheran Church, Saturday, December 4th!

For 20 years, members of Chisago Lake Lutheran, Center City, have worked together to carry out a consistently tremendous Christmas Bazaar. What began as a one-room sale of member contributions has blossomed into an eagerly awaited community event covering most of the floor space on our second level. In addition to the member donations of much-needed craft/gift items, a generous raffle, and delicious baked goods for the bake sale, many independent crafters rent space to sell their own items. Warm, fresh baked cinnamon rolls and coffee welcome the morning shoppers. If you miss breakfast, a tasty, homemade Sloppy Joe lunch fortifies the mid-day guests. The coffee pot is on all day.

The 'Bethlehem Bakery' provides Swedish Christmas specialties: Rosettes, Lefsa, Tea Rings, Cardamom Bread, etc., there are also very popular items like Quick breads/Sweet breads (banana, cranberry, pumpkin, lemon), Yeast breads (wheat, rye, etc.). Cakes, bars, fudge, Spritz cookies.
