The Compass
Week of March 1, 2021
Navigation Notes
Greetings Westside Parents and Families! Thank you for your continued support and positive feedback to the staff this week. The students have shown determination and perseverance in their learning, kindness to others, and responsibility in their actions which is a direct result of your guidance at home.
One thing you will soon notice about my leadership is my focus on student and school safety. As I have been observing and learning from the staff these last two weeks, I have found areas we can improve and am working to tighten up procedures to ensure your child remains safe during their time here. I appreciate your support in advance for some of the new protocols that will take place. The first will simply be a reminder that all parents or family members who come to campus will need to show a valid Driver's License in order to pick up one of our students or meet with a staff member such as parent conferences.
This week, Brevard Public Schools is launching their annual Parent Survey to collect your input on a variety of topics. Please take a few moments to complete the survey in English or Spanish at the links below in the next section. Additionally, any parent of a student with a disability will be receiving an envelope with a different survey specifically to your child OR you can click the link below and provide your child's information to gain access. Again, your voice matters and we appreciate your perspective!
Finally, this week we are celebrating Read Across America and honoring one of the greatest authors, Dr. Seuss. On Tuesday, March 2nd, students and staff are invited to dress up like their favorite Dr. Seuss or other storybook character. We will also be doing a whole school Drop Everything And Read block that day for all to enjoy their favorite book. Please see more information below.
Again, thank you for your continued communication, partnership with teachers, and sharing your input to make Westside better every day. Have a wonderful week!

Westside Students Learn Every Moment of Every Day!
In PE this rotation, students have been working on Fitness Challenges and "practice improves performance" while giving our their best effort. Third through Sixth graders collect and write down their scores, and then will input into a Google Survey when finished with 10 out of 15 Fitness Challenges. K-2 students are doing the same challenges but learning and practicing them not writing down their scores.
This First Grade eLearner uses text evidence to identify key details in the text during reading!
Students working with Mrs. Hurd built a life-sized number line to explore negative numbers and play Integer Tug-of-War (Powerful Positives versus Negative Ninjas).
Second graders (Aaliyah and Austin) in Ms. Miller's class worked hard on comparing and contrasting the most important points in two texts on the same topic using a Venn diagram. Her class has also been working on restating, answering, and citing evidence when writing short responses to text.
Fourth Graders in science are learning about acquired and inherited traits. Their challenge was to create camouflage butterflies like these two, fantastic examples by Isabella and Justice.
Read Across America & Dr. Seuss' Birthday
Tuesday, March 2nd
All students are invited to join in the fun for Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss' birthday! Come dressed as your favorite Dr. Seuss or storybook character and bring your favorite book for our school-wide D.E.A.R time. Masks will still need to be worn and please do not bring any "weapon-like" accessories. We look forward to this fun-filled day sharing our love for reading!
