Grade 3 Newsletter Easter Term
SJI International Elementary, Singapore
Friday 16th January
Next week our virtue is Caring.
Caring is giving love and attention to people and things that matter to you. When you care about people, you help them. You do a careful job, giving your very best effort. You treat people and things gently and respectfully. Caring makes the world a safer place.
Language Arts and Spelling
In Language Arts, the children have been immersing themselves in poetry.
This week we have been creating imaginative and fantasy poetry. We were able to learn about and comment on the use of similes and expressive language to create images and atmosphere. In our reading we have focused on comprehension and we were able to summarise a text and be aware of the gist, the key ideas and main points of the poem.
Next week we will be learning the discipline of writing poetry through choosing appropriate words, rhythm and imagery. We will use powerful verbs and analyse the poem’s impact on the reader. Throughout our poetry reading sessions we will practise reading with expression and meaning.
IPC Unit of Work
This week and next week in IPC, we have been developing our research skills as we found out more about the world rainforests.
Did you know that over 25% of natural medicines have been discovered in rainforests and rainforests used to cover 14% of the Earth’s surface but due to deforestation now only cover around 6%?
We have enjoyed using i-pads, books and atlases to develop our knowledge and understanding of rainforests and their importance. In this unit we have also been developing our map-reading skills in preparation for our exciting fieldtrip to Bukit Batok Nature Reserve. We have focused on using maps of different scales to locate a variety of different geographical features.
Next week in IPC we look forward to continuing our research of the rainforests through asking and answering geographical questions and finding out more about the animals, plants, people and land-use in the rainforest.
