Happy New Year!
The new year represents an opportunity for us all to leave behind anything that may have been holding us back or dragging us down in 2019 and push forward into 2020 with all of our energy and strength. Let's use this time of new beginnings to plan out how to make 2020 our most successful year yet, both as individuals and as a school community!
Family Reminders
- You will be selecting Thursday classes today! Please read the course descriptions distributed to you in family and follow this link to sign up. The steps for signup are as follows:

2) Review the options listed and choose the spot(s) you like.
3) Sign up! It's Easy - you will NOT need to register an account or keep a password on SignUp.com - Please remember and keep to the Lounge Cleaning Schedule agreed upon by Reps. The next few cleaning dates are: TODAY 01/09 - Mike's Family, 01/23 - Lorah's Family
School Reminders
- Reminder to all that January 20th, Martin Luther King Jr Day, is a Day of Service. Please go to the Hands On Greater Richmond website and look at the available volunteer areas and opportunities
- This year's GRAB program will be hosted in Lorah's room during family on Thursday January 23rd. Special Thanks to Lorah for putting this together each year!
- AP Art and Art 3 students will be hosting an art show on Saturday January 11th, at the Artspace Gallery on the corner of 3rd and Decatur Street in Manchester. Please come and show support for your fellow students' work.
Opportunities
New!
- Hampton University will be hosting an on-site admissions session as well as a financial aid workshop this Saturday, January 11th from 10AM until 1PM at St. Peter Baptist Church in Glen Allen. Please see the flyer attached below for further details.
- The Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Richmond is offering lifeguarding classes to students over the age of 14. Please see the document attached below for further details
Old But Good!
- The Iota Phi Lambda Sorority is offering a scholarship to community-service oriented young women. Please see Clary for details on how to apply.
- Please see Vic as soon as possible if you are interested in going to Belize in 2020
- John's Hopkins University will be hosting a Global Health and Leadership Conference in Baltimore Maryland on the weekend of April 4th and 5th, 2020. Participating students will learn from world leaders in global health and medicine. The application deadline is January 10th.
- Art 180 is offering a new series of after school programs beginning on January 13th, 2020. These programs entitled Generation Loud, Threading Stories, and Social Change Through Printmaking. Please click the link in the description for further details and to preregister.
- Need help writing college essays? VCU's Personalized Exploration for College Success Program is offering free assistance and review of essays up through the new year.
- If you are interested in helping to create this weekly announcements page as well as the video version of the announcements, we are specifically looking for an additional writer and a video production assistant to join our team. No specific experience needed. Please contact Chris or Griffin if interested.
- There will be a local college fair for RPS Students on Friday January 24th from 5:30-8 PM hosted by City Church at 1627 Monument Ave, Richmond, with an accompanying parent session on January 12th. Please see the attached flyer for additional details.
- Interested in film, social media, and public relations? Please see Clary about a great internship opportunity.
- Are you a cuber? See Cheryl, the Media Specialist about a Rubiks Cube Competition. Put together a team from Open. A great way to spark critical thinking and launch the concept of algorithms.
- Interested in finance, industrial research, statistics, or software development? Visit math.vcu.edu to explore the many different areas of mathematics available for study at VCU.
The Virginia Council on Women will provide one merit-based and one need-based scholarship to high school seniors in each of the five geographic regions across the Commonwealth through a STEM essay contest. This year, merit-based scholarships will be awarded based on the quality of the essay submitted, and the need-based scholarships will be awarded based on the quality of the essay and the individual's self-identified financial need. Award amounts may vary and are determined by the Council annually.

- SPARC's New Voices for the Theater is a two week intensive playwriting residency. Selected students will develop plays with nationally-recognized playwrights to create one-act plays. The residency is June 27-July 11, 2020. Play submission deadline is February 7, 2020.

- The 2020 Governor's Summer Residential Program is an amazing opportunity for intensive study in academics, language, mentorships, and visual and performing arts. See Clary for details on applying.
- The Research and Mentoring (RAM) Opportunity is a 2-3 week experiential learning program for juniors and seniors led by graduate students across disciplines. It is tentatively scheduled from July 13-31, 2020. Please see Clary for details on applying
FREE upcoming Virginia Commonwealth University Health Sciences Pipeline Programs:
Next Summer (Applications open Oct. 15th, 2019), Allied Health Career Exploration where students can get hands-on interactive experiences with the 9 professions in the College of Health Professions. This two-week non residential program is hosted each day within the New College of Health Professions building. Lunch is provided daily.Project ACEe (Applications open Oct. 15th, 2019) is through the School of Medicine and students meet Fridays for 90 minutes to have interactive experiences and lectures about the various specialties in Medicine. We have many more High School Programs that are all free for your students. High School Heart Day (Registration open now) is through the Pauley Heart Center here with VCU Health. It is a one day event where students learn about and see many specialties within the field of Cardiology. This event will take place from 8am to 3pm on December 14th, 2019. Lunch is provided. - Attention Seniors! The GRASP advisor is available every Tuesday from 9AM to 2PM in the Media Center to help students with FAFSA and other Finanacial Aid information. Make it a point to attend if you like money!
