Message from Administration
The year is flying by! February was filled with many exciting moments and a somber day of reflection; Silver Ridge is proud to have participated in projects aiming to foster a renewed commitment to spreading love and kindness. Thank you for your ongoing support as we work to keep our school safe and help our students reach their greatest potential. Should you have any questions or concerns about recent safety and security changes made at Silver Ridge, we encourage you to attend our March School Advisory Council (SAC) meeting on March 13th at 2:15 in the conference room.
The highlights of February were numerous! Students started the month not at school - but at work! After the annual "Take Your Child to Work Day," the hallways buzzed with stories of a hard day's work and future aspirations. Our 4th and 5th graders were fortunate to participate in an author's visit by Lynne Kelly, an exception author! Additionally, the Magical Valentine's Day Potato made his annual visit to primary classrooms around campus; all participants could hardly contain their enthusiasm! Speaking of enthusiasm, was your child an Honor Roll recipient for Quarter 2? If so, head over to our website for a slideshow of each honoree taken at our new and exciting student-focused celebration. Check it out here!
The month ahead will be filled with continued focus on student achievement and instilling our campus-wide expectations of being Respectful, Responsible, and Resourceful. Let's hope for a little luck along the way as we follow the rainbow to Spring Break and beyond!

School Counselor's Corner
Equity in education has come to the forefront in BCPS. Last spring, newly appointed Equity Liaisons from each school received training on issues related to Equity in education such as identifying and learning to close gender gaps and racial gaps in programming, discipline, or achievement; and inclusion of all students so that they may feel represented in the curriculum and feel welcome in their classrooms.
Our school-wide Inclusive Schools Week project, a "Kaleidoscope of Friends" is shown here and can be seen each day by all students in the Cafeteria. Each class discussed the meaning of inclusion and created an image to reflect that discussion. Another project in the early planning stages is a Sensory Walk. There are also four areas of curriculum which must be taught each year, and our Media Specialist, Ms. Aaron, always does a great job featuring lessons, books, and visuals to teach and support these four ares: Hispanic Heritage (OCT), Black History (FEB), Women's History (MARCH), and the Holocaust. Her wonderful bulletin board, shown below, provides a beautiful backdrop to her February lessons for Black History Month. Thank you SRE Equity Team and Elaine Aaron for supporting equity in our schools.

Note from the Nurse
Parents- if you have any uniform shorts or t-shirts that your child has outgrown, the clinic could use them. At this time, we are in need of boys shorts and t-shirts all sizes. We are critically in need of boys small shirts and shorts. We also need girls size large shorts and t-shirts.
A gentle reminder- if your child gets clothing from the clinic, kindly launder and return it so we always have clothing on hand. Thank you very much!

The Book Fair is Back!
We are in full-swing of our last Scholastic book fair. We are having a "DINO-MITE" time as we stomp, chomp and read through the wonderful spring titles. The book fair runs from Feb. 27th until March 8th. If you would like to request assistance for your child to purchase a book through the All for Books program please contact Elaine Aaron at elaine.aaron@browardschools.com or 754-323-7513. If you wish to volunteer we welcome your assistance. Please be advised you MUST complete the volunteer screening process. The book fair has many items in addition to quality literature such as posters, pointers, school supplies etc. Please discuss with your child what items they are allowed to purchase. Scholastic offers an "e-wallet" option where parents can set up a predetermined amount and secure it with a credit card online. Students are charged the actual amount that is spent. This is a great option and no physical money is lost or misplaced! Information was sent home in the book fair materials so please check it out. Again, contact Elaine Aaron with any questions.
Boxtops for Education
Boxtops are submitted periodically throughout the year but checks are awarded at only two designated times, once in January and again in April. Please continue to send in your boxtops because they DO EXPIRE. We are not allowed to send in boxtops beyond their expiration date, so thank you in advance for checking them before submission.
The Reading Across Broward Program
This program runs from April 1 to March 31 of the subsequent year. Reading logs are due at the end of April. This year the media center will be accepting both paper logs and electronic logs. Reading can be tracked digitally using Beanstack. Beanstack is a fun and motivating way for our students to keep track of their learning and receive digital badges for progress. There is also an app which allows for books to be scanned in by their isbn number. Please contact Elaine Aaron for more information.
Silver Ridge welcomed Lynne Kelly, author of Song for a Whale on Feb. 16th. Fourth and fifth grade students heard about her writing process and specifically her research about the 55 Hertz whale. Author visits help students make connections with authors and increase their understanding of authentic writing experiences. Sincere thanks to Books and Books (Laura Deutsch in particular) in Miami for providing Silver Ridge students this wonderful opportunity.

Getting Ready for Middle School
Dear Parents/Guardians of Grade 5 students:
It’s time to start thinking about Middle School. If you have moved within the past year or so and have not come in to change your address in the school database, you need to do so. The acceptance of your child’s Subject Selection Card by a receiving middle school depends on the address that is currently in the BCPS TERMS database. If you have moved, you will need specific documentation to have your address changed. You may check with Ms. Annette Baguatie, Data Entry Specialist, in the front office or call 754-323-7500 to find out what proof of address you may need.
Also, some parents mistakenly believe that enrollment at Silver Ridge Elementary means a student is automatically enrolled/assigned to Indian Ridge Middle School. That is not the case. All schools have boundaries and it is your current address that determines your middle school. Currently we have students within the Silver Ridge boundaries that live within the boundaries of Driftwood Middle, Pioneer Middle, and Indian Ridge. Students who have been reassigned to Silver Ridge will attend their home middle school, unless you apply for and are granted reassignment to another Middle School.
If you are not in the boundaried area for a specific Middle School you want your child to attend, you may apply for reassignment. Some of you may have already done so. The reassignment window reopens on May 1, 2019. Please check http://browardschools.com/schoolchoice for further info. regarding reassignment requests. Thank you.
